I've not seen a thread about this, and thought it would be interesting to see what people listen to, and maybe introduce some new music that others have never heard of.

Records:

I'm really into the album "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" right now. Fantastic summer record.

The Waterboys: Fisherman's Blues

Les Futures du Primitifs--World Musette [R. Crumb's band]

Putumayo: Brazil [that whole series is really great. www.Putumayo.com]

The Clash: London Calling

Buena Vista Social Club

the Ultra Lounge Series--love that hi-fi music! The Tiki/Island stuff is my favorite.

For bands/performers:

Al Jolson

Dean Martin

Sons of the Pioneers

Gene Autry

Curtis Eller's American Circus ("New York's angriest yodelling banjo player" --local NYC)

The Clash

old U2 [not the newer stuff]

REM--mostly the older stuff, but some of the new stuff is good.

Chris Moore (local NYC)

Son House

Big Mama Thornton

Howlin' Wolf

Mississippi John Hurt

I like all kinds of stuff, obviously. Sort of all over the map. I'm curious to see what other people post! Web links would be nice too, so people can look at some of the more underground band sites and get to know their music.

I'm preferable to rock music, and its various flavours, from hard rock to Southern Blues rock, and all points in between. Some examples would include:

Warren Zevon

Pink Floyd

The Who

The Clash

Van Halen

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Jimi Hendrix

Collective Soul

Nickelback

Alice Cooper

Ted Nugent

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Iron Maiden

Cinderella

Muddy Waters

Way too many more to list.

I have that CD. It's very cool. I think The Kinks are one of the most underrated bands of the 60's.

As for what I like, I'll just list what I've got in my cube at work right now:

The Beatles white album

Portishead "Dummy"

Crowded House "Woodface"

Fountains of Wayne "Utopia Parkway"

Elliott Smith "Figure 8"

"Carmina Burana"

A collection of 60's soul (Aretha, Otis, Wilson Pickett, et al)

I listen to Japanese music, mostly. My favorite band is Malice Mizer (as... I've prolly said before). Some others I like are Go!Go!7188, Morning Musume, Tommy February6, Lolita no. 18, Dir en grey, X Japan, hide, Psycho Le Cemu, Luci'fer Luscious Violenoue, Fiction, and a long list of Indies bands I'm not getting into.

Other than that, I like Rasputina, Switchblade Symphony, Strawberry Switchblade, Garbage, No Doubt (more of their older stuff), Ani DiFranco, Björk, Taty... and others.

I can't always remember right off the top of my head.

But my guilty pleasure is bluegrass music. And bagpipes, too. Must love them.

Rolling Stones - Tattoo You, Sucking in the 70s, Sticky Fingers

Beatles - Sgt Peppers, White album

Robben Ford and the Blue Line - debut album

The Kinks - Come Dancing With the Kinks

Uriah Heep - The Magician's Birthday

Mountain - Best of Mountain

Elton John - Madman Across the Water

Humble Pie - Smokin'

I don't really know what specific bands I like, which is a pretty weird thing to say but my brother downloads music like crazy (we've probably got at least 2000 songs by now) and we have very similar tastes in music and so I mainly just put on a random mix of something and good stuff comes out. But I like:

-Jam Bands

-Bluegrass

-Jazz

-Spanish Guitar

-Middle Eastern

-Sixties rock

-Classical anything

...and lots of other stuff, depending on what mood I'm in. Some of my favorite artists include String Cheese Incident, Phish, Steeleye Span, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Queen, Van Morrison, James Taylor, and a really long list of other people that I either can't think of or whose names I don't even know.

Nah, I would definitely win for most obscure taste in music:

Merzbow, Zoviet France, Yen Pox, Autechre, Panacea, FeindFlug, Arzt+Pfusch, Siechtum, Sonar, Pain Station, Project Pitchfork, Xebox, Converter, Beefcake, Forma Tadre, Radiohead (not so obscure, but awesome none the less), Muted Logic, Masonna, Terrorfakt, Dive, P.A.L., H.P.P., Rob Gee, Delta 9, Ah Cama-Sotz, Mono No Aware, Der Blutharsch, Asche, Black Lung, Snog, Death in June, Winterkälte, Xorcist, X Marks the Pedwalk...... and the list goes on, and on, and on, and on.....

But for those who have no clue who those bands are, here are some genres (noise, powernoise, IDM, drum&bass, gabber, industrial, dark ambient...)

yay.

I'm all over the spectrum. Classic blues, classical, rock, punk, folk, so perhaps a few samples:

Best currently active bands: Rasputina, White Stripes and Le Tigre.

Best (unfortunately dead) dead: Zappa, Memphis Minnie, Little Walter, Louis Prima.

Best broken-up: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cibo Matto.

Best classic living soloists: Kate Bush, Bowie, Cyndi Lauper.

Best one-hit wonder: Taco, "Putting on the Ritz".

Best soundtracks: Repo Man ("Pablo Picasso was never called an *******"), Tank Girl (produced by Courtney Love in a rare moment of lucidity capturing the best of Bjork, L7, and Portishead in a mix that flows), Oh Brother, Where art Thou, Amelie (Yann Tiresen, a master of accordian at toy piano), and Waking Life (Tosca Tango Orchestra.)

People, don't even get me started... *must resist temptation...*

There's a reason I have 16 days worth of music in iTunes. I simply like too many genres of music!

At one point I could have easily just said Metallica, "Master of Puppets," but I was young then and didn't know as much music as I do now. It's still one of the all-time greats, but it shares that honor with quite a few others. There's more good music out there than one can listen to in one lifetime. Amazing to think that there's even more crap, as if we need any more.

np: "Starry-Eyed Surprise" (featuring Shift of Crazy Town): Oakenfold

Whew, I like far too much stuff, but everyone's mentioned a few that I love except THE best band ever, The Church. They are so underappreciated it's painful, yet they keep producing great stuff that's always better than the last thing they've done. Other stuff:

Wilco

Uncle Tupelo

The Jayhawks

Silvio Rodriguez (Cuban troubador)

Leo Kottke (when he doesn't sing)

Kate Bush

Jack Frost

The Replacements

Grandpa Boy (Paul Westerberg's alter ego)

XTC

Ali Farka (Mali blues)

Cafe Tacuba

Maldita Vecindad

Dream Theater

Pink Floyd and Roger Waters solo stuff

Damn near everybody on Ninja Tune

Polvo

King's X

And on and on...
