Seeing as it's close to Halloween and I haven't seen a thread like this I will ask. What is the best and the worst horror movie you've seen? and why?

ElliottsMom 10-26-2006 01:27 PM

as for me the worst is by far Death Tunnel this user comment on IMDB.com sums it up quite well

Quote:
Death Tunnel, Death Tunnel, oh god end my pain, Death Tunnel.. How could you be so terrible? You have so much going for you on paper:

1) Creepy setting

2) ...

there's really nothing good about this movie, the acting was terrible, the plot was terrible and overdone, also the editing and camera work gave me a headache.

as far as the best I'd have to say Night of the Living Dead it was the first zombie movie that I've ever seen and it scared me senseless.

Jessica Alana 10-26-2006 01:29 PM

I'd love to answer, but scary movies are my favorite so there are wayyy too many! I could sit and watch all 4,647 of the Halloween/Michael Myers movies in a row, for the millionth time. Then there's the 1, 2, Freddy's coming for you, 3, 4, you better lock the door.. and Jason was the man when he took Manhattan.

Then all the non-classic movies like Dawn of the Dead, 28 days later...Oh, Stay Alive (Video games and death? HELLOOOOO? What's better?)

Two of my favorite halloween movies that aren't so scary are Hocus Pocus, and The Worst Witch. Those ones bring back memories.

...I could go on and on and on..

troub 10-26-2006 01:30 PM

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, was horrible in a scary scary way. Does that count?

codemonkey 10-26-2006 01:32 PM

Psycho

Best. Scary. Movie. Ever!

Jessica Alana 10-26-2006 01:45 PM

Oh, I forgot the Psychos!

jeezycreezy 10-26-2006 01:53 PM

Best: Dawn Of The Dead. < That link is to a review I wrote for my no defunct website. Read it and tell me I didn't like this movie.

Two caveats: 1) I use swear words and if you're a teenager or an internet fanboy don't read it. Please. You'll just be upset. I'm not being all Lemony Snicket here. You really should not read it. 2) I was on a huge anti-Atkins kick at the time.

Worst: Ghost Ship.

Jessica Alana 10-26-2006 01:54 PM

Oh man. Ghost ship was so bad I blocked it out of memory. I have to agree with that as one of the worst.

codemonkey 10-26-2006 01:55 PM

Oh, and I LOVE the original Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi.

Michael 10-26-2006 05:09 PM

My favorites would probably be the original Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street.

Least favorite may be The Hills Have Eyes. It's supposed to be a classic and it was such a disappointment. I mean come on...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The dog saves everyone in the end.

nigel 10-26-2006 07:23 PM

"The Hitcher" freaked me out.

evilvegan 10-26-2006 07:26 PM

Did anyone see "Hostel"? I saw it, and although it didn't seem all that scary, I thought I was gonna barf up my nachos. It was so horrificly vivid....and this is from someone whose first movie ever was Pumpkin Head.

Yeah uh..the eye thing.

jenna 10-26-2006 08:10 PM

"an american haunting" and "the cave" were both disappointments.

codemonkey 10-26-2006 08:40 PM

American Psycho gave me nightmares

It still creeps me out when I think about it

*shudder*

Jessica Alana 10-26-2006 08:53 PM

Stephen King's "It" is still a good one. Beep beep.

shaved_women 10-26-2006 10:15 PM

Best horror movie is American Psycho (but the book is better) because it's an insightful look into the capitalist's hidden thoughts unleashed.

Worst horror movie has to be STUDENT BODIES.....a nerd kills sexually active high school students. It's so bad it's good

IamJen 10-27-2006 04:36 AM

Okay, I know it's not everyone's taste, but The Shining (Nicholson version) scared the bejeezus out of me. ((shudder))

Nosferatu's pretty awesome too, although a bit less "scary" perhaps.

I haven't watched it in ages, but the one that really freaked me out when I was younger was the later version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. 12 year old IAJ looked carefully at those around her for weeks after that. I just read that they're doing a remake for next year, but alas, Nicole Kidman stars.

And, everyone giggles when I mention this on VB, but Poltergeist is scary to me too. Oh man...whew.

My least favorite award would probably go to this stellar film http://imdb.com/title/tt0088117/ Oh man, a homicidal Santa.

Sevenseas 10-27-2006 06:20 AM

Shining is somewhat scary but I tend to see it more as a showcase of Nicholson's ballet-esque (if that's even a word) acting.

Gory stuff and big monsters don't do it for me. Rather, I would nominate Jacob's Ladder and Rosemary's Baby as the scariest films I've seen. The former because the whole world in it is something alien, hostile, cold and strange, and the latter because

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the ending is so unreal: you wonder if there's a natural, logical explanation and then Polanski says that there isn't and hits you in the face with all the power of the supernatural and the evil.

Blair Witch Project was pretty scary too, mostly after I had seen it, not during watching.

sunshinegal 10-27-2006 07:08 AM

Best: I love the newer version of Amittyville Horror, that was creepy! Plus it has Ryan Reynolds in it....

Best: Pulse. Holy Moly, this isn't on DVD yet, but this movie creeped me out!

Best: The Omen, the new version. That was creepy and entertaining!

Worst: jeepers creepers. OH MAN! I was mad that I wasted an hour and a half of my life on this movie.

Worst: The Hills Have Eyes - WTF? I think Wes Craven movies are going down the crapper fast.

Pescas 10-27-2006 07:13 AM

Saw = best

The grudge= worst

Christopher Jon 10-27-2006 09:02 AM

Best: The Exorcist.

Worst: too many but I'll go with House of Wax.
