Hi guys,

I'm currently doing a course to develop a small business idea a friend and I had. There's new technology available that can turn a 3D computer model into a real object, via 3D printing (otherwise called rapid prototyping). The 3D print can be used as a master pattern to then create a mould and cast the object in silver (or gold, or platinum). There is a place here in Australia, in Melbourne, that I send models to, and they do all the printing and casting.

We've used this to create some really funky jewelry, and we'd like to go commercial. As part of developing this as a business, I have to do some market research. I've written a survey, which you can get here:

http://www.lisa3d.org/misc/Market%20Research.txt

If you would like to spare a few minutes and help me out, I would be very grateful! Save it to your computer, open it in notepad (you may have to turn on "word wrap") and then answer the questions. Then copy and paste it into an email and send it to [email protected] .

(Note: The spelling in the survey is Australian/UK English. It may seem weird to Americans :P).

However, I would also like to hear people's opinions on jewelry in general, especially if you have any concerns about vegan jewelry.

I love jewelry! I collect vintage costume jewelry (I have an obnoxiously large collection), and I practice and teach various beading techniques. I'm very drawn to semi-precious stones and have recently made necklaces with blue lace agate and bloodstone. I'll soon be working with yellow turquoise, jade and carnelian, among others. While faceted stones can be quite beautiful, I lean toward preferring that they be a more natural shape. I tend to use more sterling silver findings than gold, but I do like both. I have yet to do any metal work, but I am interested and hope to pursue it sometime in the near future. I'll complete your survey later today or tomorrow. Funky jewelry is good - best of luck with your endeavors!

Thanks guys .

It's been interesting talking to people about their jewelry tastes over the past few days. People fall into some very distinct categories. Some people won't wear anything but high class gold stuff, and they only buy one thing a year. Other people won't go near gold, and buy little silver things every few months or even once a month. And then there are the people who like fun things made out of beads and wire .

I was a bit nervous about doing this survey, because I felt like people would be annoyed by it, but in fact most people love telling you about what they like and don't like.

Personally, I love silver. I'm not much into gemstones, but I do have a moonstone necklace, and a silver and turquoise bracelet. I really like the stuff I've been making (two pendants based around Japanese characters, a seahorse pendant, and soon an "om" symbol). It's so amazing to be able to make beautiful things, and then wear them .
