If you opened this thread thinking that HP stood for Hewlett Packard, then you are in the wrong place!

It's a mere 84 days (July 16th) until we shall be able to hold "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" in our eager hands. My lovely sisters and I will be among those waiting at 11:59 pm on the 15th. (although last time, the bookstore had this lottery thing and we had to wait until like 1:30 )

So, share your love of Harry Potter here, let us revel in our geekiness.

Obligatory warning:

***spoilers ahead*** If you haven't read, books 1-5, proceed with caution.

In case you haven't picked up on it yet, I'm a bit anxious for the new book to come out. 2 years is a long time! Sis and I are planning to re-read the older books, so that everything will be fresh on 7/16.

I've not been a fan of the movies so far. The first two I found "acceptable", the third, well it ranks among my "top 5 most disappointing movie experiences". However, Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the books, and director Newell is fabulous, so I'm holding out some hope, lol.

The ? of the hour....

Who *is* the Half Blood Prince?

Kurmudgeon 04-23-2005 08:34 AM

I'm half way through the 4th book at the moment (the first three I read the other week, one a day, but I haven't had as much spare time for #4). I saw the 3 movies last week.... I waited all this time to see the movies because I was worried about the movies spoiling the experience of reading the books for the first time.

I enjoyed the movies, especially the character of Hermione, and Emma Watson's portrayal of her. I laugh at that character in the books more than anything (especially the 4th book.... I kept laughing out loud on the train today).

It's almost been like being a kid (well, teenager) again and reading C.S.Lewis' "Narnia" chronicles for the first time.

Although, all the non-human animal flesh consumption and exploitation of non-humans can get to be a bit much (I love Hermione's "elf liberation" activism.... although I am just up to that chapter so no-one mention where it goes..... actually, maybe I better stay out of this thread until I finish books 4 and 5).

msbunnicula 04-23-2005 09:03 AM

I didn't particularly like the movies either. I did, however, like the third one more than the other two (that might just be because the third book is quite possibly my favourite).

I am really looking forward to the 6th book though.

GhostUser 04-23-2005 09:04 AM

Aww, I thought this was going to be about hardcore pornography..

1vegan 04-23-2005 09:05 AM

The last book, I forgot the title, but it was 700 pages gave me a headache, though I did enjoy it.

Pasta>Cruelty 04-23-2005 09:07 AM

I've read all the books two or three times. My favorite was The Chamber of Secrets. I can't wait for the sixth one to come out.

KimberlyNYC 04-23-2005 10:17 AM

Yay, Harry Potter! I finished the 4th book the other day and I just loved it. The books, like the characters, seem to mature as they go on. I'm waiting to pick up "Order of the Phoenix" at the library and then I'll be ready to proceed when July comes around.

hopeforanimals 04-23-2005 10:52 AM

Will be in line with the other Muggles on July 16 at Books-a-Million.

My favorite so far is Chamber of Secrets. I was *SO* disappointed by the movie, and Prizoner of Azkaban did not renew my faith in the power of film. If Goblet of Fire is just as disappointing, I'm going to swear off the remainder of the movies.

Walter 04-23-2005 11:11 AM

I found the first two movies to just be OK. I can't imagine liking them if I hadn't read the books. I did enjoy the third one and was glad for the director change.

I definitely thought the title stood for Hewlett Packard. I'm going to see that everytime I see this thread.

I saw the first two movies before I read the books and I read the third book before seeing the movie. I liked the first two movies, but found the third one disappointing. Maybe the key is to see the movies before reading the books.

Amy SF 04-23-2005 11:25 AM

Damn! I'm going to have to re-read Order of the Phoenix before HBP comes out. It's been a long while since I read it, and I've forgotten most of it.

As for the movies, they were just OK. I didn't think they were anything special. My sister gave me the DVDs of the first two for my birthday, but I just don't watch them. I'm not rushing to get the DVD of the third movie. However, I'm still planning on seeing movie #4 when it comes out, although I understand quite a bit of the book had to be cut in order to keep the movie from running 4 or 5 hours, and it will be interesting to see how they manage what was left in. The Dursleys will be completely absent from this movie. Too bad. They're fun to hate.

Cissy 04-23-2005 11:45 AM

Squee, I can't waaiiiit!

Molly Weasley will be cut out, too. Too bad; I like her and the way she always incorporates Harry into the family.

I think so, Kimberly. I saw the Sorcerer's Stone before reading the book and was posivitely spellbound by it--I had to read the books after that. Since reading the remainder of the books before the other movies came out, I was highly disappointed by the films.

msbunnicula 04-23-2005 03:45 PM

Yeah, I read the books before seeing the movies and I didn't like the movies. But like Mikie, I don't think that I would have watched/liked them at all if I hadn't read the books.

So it kind of goes both ways.

Pasta>Cruelty 04-23-2005 03:51 PM

I only saw the first movie. I didn't really like it, but I wasn't crazy about the first book either. I don't go to the movies much, but I might see the fourth one. I liked Goblet of Fire.

Brandon 04-23-2005 03:57 PM

I also saw the first 2 movies before I read any of the books. I agree that the books are way better, but I like the movies. I have my copy of HBP pre-ordered at Amazon, so it's just a matter of waiting it out until it's released and shipped to me.

I've been considering re-reading Order of the Phoenix again too, but I can't decide whether to read my English copy or my Spanish one that I got for Christmas.

I have no idea who the Half-Blood Prince will be. My original (and fairly obvious) guess was that it was Seamus, but I remember hearing or reading that it was not him. He's the only character I recall mentioning that he was 1/2 muggle and 1/2 wizard.

I'm hoping that we will see more of Arthur Weasley in the new movie and book. I love that character! One of my bettas is named after him.

hopeforanimals 04-23-2005 05:16 PM

OOH! Can we talk about whether or not we think Harry's going to bite the dust in #7?

IamJen 04-24-2005 12:55 AM

Hm...didn't JKR already say that he lives? (I need to catch up on my HP gossip, lol)

hopeforanimals 04-24-2005 08:37 AM

I thought she was tight-lipped about his fate in #7. Never heard her comment one way or the other on it.

porvida 04-24-2005 12:19 PM

i'm honestly going to die from excitement. I'm going to be in line at midnight. and I'm going to stay up all day just reading. maybe a break to eat. eeee!

Pasta>Cruelty 04-24-2005 12:40 PM

I won't wait in line at midnight, but when I get the sixth book the next day, I'll probably read it in less than 24 hours. Last time it was 26 hours total, including sleep, eating, and breaks, but I know I can shorten those up. HP comes first!

brownieB26 04-24-2005 01:09 PM

I was kinda hoping HP6 wouldn't come out so fast. I hated HP5. There was so no plot. It was so....post modern?

Not that I won't be waiting in line on July 15th in my HP glasses and witch hat. I just hope JK has taken her time so we don't have another Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
"hey lookie, it's me! Voldemort! I just wanted to stop by and say hi! Eff you Dumbledore, I'm cooler than you. *blast* Whatch you call me biatch? Tom? wtf, Imma busta cap in yo' ass!!! Oh, no I'm not, cause you're better than me *disappears*

hopeforanimals 04-24-2005 02:46 PM

I spread mine out over a WEEK because I knew it would be forever until I could get my next fix.

I think Voldemort is also 1/2 muggle and 1/2 wizard.

IamJen 04-24-2005 03:47 PM

Yep..Muggle dad, witch mom. But JKR's already said that neither Harry or Voldemort are the HBP. Hmmm.

ha. i stopped to eat once when I read it. and once to run out of my room screaming at my mom: "OH MY GOD THEY KILLED HIM!!!!!" I just sat and read all day.

<---loser

Brandon 04-24-2005 03:56 PM

Okay, okay....I can't hold it in anymore. I am actually the Half-Blood Prince.

I hope this doesn't ruin anyone's hopes for the book.

Ok, it's abundantly clear I've had too much coffee.
