John Peel OBE, legendary Radio 1 and Radio 4 presenter, has died suddenly on holiday in Peru.

It has been confirmed that John died from a heart attack last night - he leaves behind his wife Sheila and four children.

The veteran broadcaster had worked for Radio 1 since its launch in 1967.

Radio 1 Controller Andy Parfitt said:

"John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1."

I'll remember his name from all the alt-rock B-Sides from BBC's "Peel Sessions". Moderm music loses a great one. rock on, john.

BBC Radio has been strange today, Natalie, and I thought about it - I can't really think of anyone in America that is an "American John Peel" - largely, I suppose, because there's no "national radio station" like BBC radio. Outside of his Peel Sessions that made tons of B-Sides, his name hardly surfaced over here. I imagine it's a different story over there?

He is amazingly famous and respected over here. There is/was no one else like him.

Apparently hes been in radio for 40 years. !!

He's championed so many bands, given so many bands a break, played so much great stuff on his radio show. (Its on in a few minutes, i wonder what they will play instead...)

Its really, really sad news.

Those were some of the best recordings of their songs, I think. I love the Peel Sessions version of "This Charming Man."
