Leslie Nielsen, who dazzled with deadpan in The Naked Gun and Airplane!, passed away on Sunday at a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was being treated for pneumonia, according to the New York Times. He was 84.

Full story here: http://news-briefs.ew.com/2010/11/28...-nielsen-dies/

I think I've only seen him in Airplane!, but I've heard nothing but good review on his acting (no clue what his personal life was like).

Did you write the book of love, and do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock Ân roll,
Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

I was very sad when I found out, I absolutely loved him in Naked Gun 33 1/3. I used to watch that movie over and over when I was younger. He was a great actor.

Well... We shot a lot of people together. It's been great. But today I retire, so if I do any shooting now, it'll have to be within the confines of my own home. Hopefully, an intruder and not an in-law, like at my bachelor party. - Frank Drebin

Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Jane: Goodyear?

Frank: No, the worst.

How sad.

He was in Forbidden Planet, a science fiction remake of The Tempest, and for years played villains and straight dramatic roles. He used to claim that his part in Airplane! was his first comic part, but it was his first comic part in years. He also appeared in a M*A*S*H episode called "The Ringbanger", episode sixteen of the first season. It originally aired on January 21, 1973; if anyone is so inclined to rent the first season just to see this episode, it's worth it, IMO.

Oh bugger. He was funny. I can remember seeing him in serious roles when he was younger and it never quite seemed right.

I was thinking about him the other day, I was remembering him from an interview on the BBC. I don't know if I had seen his picture somewhere or something.

The first movie I ever went to, The Poseidon Adventure, had Leslie Nielsen in it. My dad took me to see it when I was eight years old. Not long after he started doing comedies and the man has always made me laugh. He had a great knack for telling a joke at his own expense and I think that's one of the things that endeared him so much to audiences.

The Police Squad tv show and subsequent films were always my favorites:

Female Shop Assistant: Is this some kind of bust?
Lt. Frank Drebin: Well... it's very impressive, yes, but we need to ask you a few questions.

He will be sorely missed!

I liked the end of each episode of Police Squad! when the actors would suddenly freeze and try to stay that way.

Just last week, I watched Forbidden Planet, mostly because he was in it. I was kind of wavering on whether to see it, but when I saw Leslie Nielsen was in the cast, I said to myself "Heck yeah! I'm in".

I have always loved his movies because he's so over-the-top. I'll miss you, Leslie! Thanks for all the laughs!

RIP Leslie. Thanks for the laughs.

Are you sure this is art, not vandalism?

Yeah, he was great in Airplane and The Naked Gun movies. Some of his later movies, though, were just other comedies with lousy scripts that cast him to play pretty much exactly the same character he had played in Naked Gun, just by a different name. If you ever get the chance to see him in "2001: A Space Travesty", I highly recommend that you don't.

I've actually been thinking of picking up Forbidden Planet on DVD lately, just because I'm a fan of old sci-fi movies. I had actually forgotten he was in it, as it's been a long time since I saw that one.

And the line (which I frequently quote) is "Surely you can't be serious!" "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." It's a pun on surely and Shirley being pronounced the same. It always bugs me when people quote it in writing and mix and match those words, as if they can't understand the joke.
