Cheese Cravings

Help! I'm only on day 2 of trying to go vegan and I'm struggling heavily with craving cheese.

I'm not sure what to do! I'm worried I might give into the cravings!

If you can get a hold of it, Field Roast chao cheese (creamy original) should help with it a little.

If you care about the ethics side of veganism, watch or re-watch footage of what happens in the dairy industry -- should put you off.

I'm sure many of us can sympathize - I know cheese was a really tough one for my husband in particular. Non-dairy commercial cheeses can definitely help - he still eats those pretty regularly. For me, I actually found that often times it was a creamy or rich texture/flavour I was craving rather than actual cheese, so you may find that having something with healthy fat helps; maybe try things like: avocado toast with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast and salt (this really really works well for me), or make a creamy cashew sauce or vegenaise-based dressing to dollop on your pasta or pizza or sandwich.

As @jessandreia said, watching footage of the dairy industry really helps curb those cravings too - my mental mantra for a LONG time was, "your cravings are not worth a mama and baby cow's cries of sadness" ... and also remember that milk is FILLED with hormones as well as trace amounts of morphine that make it addictive so that the baby cows can bond with their mothers, and grow nice and big... kick that addiction and you'll kick the cravings - you can do it ^_^

Add salt, think of the atrocity of baby veal calves, and remember that your taste buds do not rule you. Cheese is actually addictive, so cravings are not unexpected. But really, who's in charge here? Your taste buds or your heart? Good luck. It's hard, but it's worth it. I promise.

It WILL pass. Honest.

I was a super cheesehead, loved it in all forms; I would prefer a cheese board to pudding every time!

Entirely not bothered now though. I think losing a lifelong love of cheese kind of happens by stealth, it sneaks up on you and it's quite surprising when you finally notice that it's happened. Quite an eye opener. I do believe what they say about its addictive components.

He's started having cheese in occasionally again, so we sometimes have it in the fridge, but it really makes no dent in my awareness. Now I've found a sub I like, I do get in the faux stuff now and then and actually prefer it.

Give it time, and meanwhile find ways to get your salty/oily fix in other forms; olives, an extra drizzle of olive oil, fried onions, marinated artichokes, dairy-free pesto, avocados, pangritata (poor man's parmesan - look it up), nutritional yeast etc.

Don't panic, it'll come.

I switched from blue cheese in salads to all kinds of olives
I found adding some refined coconut oil to cashew cheeees with garlic is wonderful in a cheees ball
Vegan cheeses have come a long way from starchy tasting shreds. I found Daiya block cheees -the havarit jalepano and cheddar- are better than dairy, both melted and cold

It does take commitment. I quit when I rescued a pregnant cat and watched her with her babies. No one should ever enslave anyone else, or steal their babies.

I had this problem as I loved cheese before I was vegan - it helped me tremendously to use olive oil on pasta, or avacado/guacamole on sandwiches or burritos at first.

Follow Your Heart has a really excellent vegan smoked gouda now, and I echo the recommendation of Chao cheese, particularly if you like to make a toasted cheese sandwich. Daiya shreds are great on pizza.

Other "creamy" vegan products like Just Mayo, FYH pesto vegenaise, and Daiya's new ranch and blue cheez salad dressing might help. I really like the blue cheez as a dip for raw veggies.

Make sure you are eating enough calories and vegetable fats, as that could set off a cheese craving...so if you are looking longingly at someone's cheese pizza, you may just need a big meal or some fat in your diet.

I was told once while posting about a cheese craving on this forum that nuts or nut butters may help release the chemicals you might be associating with cheese, that affect mood or satiety.

Oh also if you want a "cold cheese" for crackers, it's a little expensive, but Whole Foods sells a product called Ne Chevre, which is a cashew based vegan cheese spread, which also has nutritional yeast to give it a really authentic cheesy flavor.

I have bought it two or three times, it might be a good investment if it will help you...I recommend the black lava salt flavor, but there's also a plain and maybe an herb one?

I've noticed that in the cheese section of grocery stores, fresh deli dairy cheeses stink to me now. They don't smell as awful as meat, but they no longer smell remotely appealing. It's not as noticeable in the mass processed cheese aisle. Is it just me?

I can't stand the smell of cheese, and cooked cheese will make me gag (idiots at work who eat cooked food in their cubicles )


I am one who was not a cheese eater due to intolerance (I quit cheese in 1999 with the exception of a very rare Parmesan or mozzarella and I usually paid for eating that) . So when I went vegan, I naturally avoided even the commercial vegan cheese for several years, which just didn't seem that appealing. This allowed me to really embrace plant creativity and discover what I could make with the simplest ingredients. I made pizzas with homemade crust and a really good tomato sauce, or would add homemade hummus on top with pineapple, olives, peppers. I discovered cauliflower alfredo sauce, and carrot/potato cheese sauce, or tofu sweet potato nutritional yeast creamy cheese sauce for macaroni. I started making nut based sliceable cheese and cashew or almond cream cheese. There is nothing better tasting to me than cashew cream cheese, omg.

Eventually I began to venture into commercial vegan cheese and tried Daiya shreds and block cheese, which are ok but not great. Cooked and melted Daiya cheese tastes decent to me but some people can't stand it (and my digestion protests after a good dose of Daiya cheese). I suspect one's taste buds change over time being vegan. If I had been a cheese eater and switched to Daiya right away I am not sure I would have liked it. I tried Chao just once and had a violent attack of cramps and diarrhea so never again lol. I have never tried Follow Your Heart. I once bought a block of cashew cheese and it was ok but not as good as homemade, and at $13 for a small block with four servings it was too expensive.

The more you build up a repertoire of vegan recipes and food ideas, the less appealing cheese will become. One of my favorite sandwiches for grilling is with sliced avocado and tomato. I'm really into bean dips too. My big thing though was Greek yogurt, the one and only dairy product I used to eat regularly that didn't make me sick. So when I went vegan I learned to make creamy things to help with that craving, and now i make homemade plant yogurts.

I second adding vegan mayo to stuff like macaroni/sauces as it adds a tang and flavor. And nuts have just that right amount of salty/sweetness that...if I remember...cheese has. I sometimes do a Parmesan by blending/processing blanched almonds or cashews with nutritional yeast, garlic powder and/or marjoram, and just a pinch of lemon or lime juice. It makes the perfect Parmesan texture and the juice really gives it a nice bite. My partner loves this on pasta and potato dishes.

Try some vegan mayo (ones with oils- not the nut based, or tofu based healthier stuff- I like Just Mayo) and sprinkle with as nooch as you can for a sandwich spread. A bit of garlic powder, black salt, or a drop of lemon juice brings out even more flavor. Or add chopped olives if you like. This is my favorite way of adding a cheese flavor to sammies

Cheese is the last thing I gave up. Still haven't found a good substitute. Still have cravings on and off. Found out where I can get some of the vegan cheeses mentioned on this board but only from an online shop and it only delivers "cold" to some areas so I have to call them to find out if it will send to here.

I think cheese is the hardest thing to give up. I just keep reminding myself that it is dairy, no cheese it's dairy, no cheese it's dairy, no cheese it's dairy, no cheese it's dairy.........

I still have meat cravings when I went vegetarian.
Don't start of with commercial substitutes. I'm just getting into field roast and yves meats, and I must say it tastes great when you haven't had meat in 16 months! But I tried vegan cheese and as a person attempting to go vegan, they aren't great. Just like I'd probably think about veggie dogs and yves salami.

Word of advice; just be patient. The first few weeks are hard but this is what I've found:
I can't be in the same room as someone cooking meat, it's revolting.
Watching my family eating turkey burgers is like the worst thing for me. I bet in a while you'll start to feel disgusted by certain dairy products like I have about metas.The idea of eating a hot dog right now makes me imagine pulling a wet gross hot dog out of the hot dog water.

Start with easy creamy dishes that are naturally vegan creamy without using a ton of the fake stuff. A few day vegan will easily be able to tell what mayo tastes like vs fake mayo.

Make some fettuccini Alfredo with nutritional yeast.. Etc..
It might just trick you into thinking you've had some dairy.

But try not to have daiya, it's not great and I bet it's only good after at least 3 months vegan.

I never did the watching videos trick but I did cheat once. I ate a piece of pepperoni pizza when I went cold turkey vegetarian but I've been good ever since. ( other than eating foods I dint know had meat)

Cheese can be a tough one. There are some truly excellent vegan cheese substitutes, but they are only sold in Europe. One such brand is Wilmersburger, made in Germany. My wife's uncle brought some of this back from a trip to Europe, and it was absolutely convincing.




Using creamy ingredients (like avocado) and tangy foods (like mustard, and marinated green olives) can provide satisfaction similar to what you get from cheese. I've talked with other people who say the same thing. Mustard is a good cheese substitute in sandwiches, and marinated green olives, artichoke hearts, and sundried tomatoes are great on pizza. Hummous is a great substitute for sour cream dips.

I had the Trader Joe's brand of vegan cheese and it was horrible! Not only was the texture off putting, a very gooey consistency, but the taste was too strong and did not remind me of cheese much.

I might try the Daiya one day but I don't really have much cheese cravings.

I've tried quite a few vegan cheeses here in the UK, and most of them are repulsive!
There's only I think two that I've tried, that resemble cheese at all. And I like them quite a lot.
But the rest, blech!

I do buy Trader Joes vegan mozzerella- but not to be cheese. I found it's good for bringing things together. I use it sparingly. My TJ's enchilada are pretty much a mix of their soy choirizo, black beans, maybe some rice and a sprinkle of the cheees shreds. I add a swath of this to corn torillas, roll up, and place in a casserolle filled with enchilada sauce. I fill it tightly making sure they get sauce on each side by rolling in it as I put them in. They get baked for about 30 minutes. The cheese just adds more a texture than a taste, which I like. Add too much and it's gummy

They have a almond mozzerella now which is truly horrid- and has a 'touch' of lactose, so not even vegan.

Daiya block cheeeses win for me, but I haven't tried things like Chao

I can see using the TJ Vegan Mozzarella as binder but not as a topping for me. The texture is just so odd to me. One minute it looks solid, next minute it's all melted and everywhere.

I will have to try the Daiya ones next time. They seem to have good reviews online.

It was the worst of cravings for me, especially since my wife isn't vegan and she loves pizza. When I get pizza without cheese, it's not the same and it took time for me to adjust.

Yes. One good documentary every other day or a Youtube bing for an hour will do the trick!

Cheese is very addictive and the reason it's on EVERYTHING at restaurants.

Vegan cheese has gotten so go that I heard a pizza place started using a new one from Diaya and people were trying to return pizzas because they thought it was real cheese.

Olives helped me a ton!
