Does your body stop accepting lactose?

I've been at the hospital all day and I asked if they had any vegan-friendly items to eat.. and the nurse said "Oh, we have a veggie burger I think that's vegan" -- so I ordered that. Haven't ate in a few days.. so I ordered 2 of them, apple sauce, and side of rice.

First sandwich was ok.. and halfway through the 2nd one.. I got nauseated, stomach pain... and bloating (this was a course of 45 mins) , it was only slight-- so I shrugged it off and kept eating it...

About 2 hours in.. I had intense cramping. horrid gas. and had to use the bathroom (sorry for TMI,.. but it was quite a lot of diarrhea--like it's seriously all water and still going on).

I'm thinking the buns had some sort of dairy and or the veggie burger. I tasted a slight taste of 'cheese' like flavor (maybe?) I've been vegan for a little while now. (and been pretty strict with it). The only other time I mistakenly ate dairy (was around 2 weeks of when I went vegan) got a similar (less dramatic) reaction.

However, before not going vegan.. I never had this issue before (I don't mind it- as it helps me be more aware of what I'm eating). Could not having dairy cause an intolerance to lactose?

I think it's very individual. We've had those discussions here, and some do find they've developed lactose intolerance, others have not
My personal experience is that I have not.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, it's so bad that in a place that should be all about healing you get sick from not having proper food!

Isn't there anyone who can help you? Even something as simple as plain oatmeal.

Where in the world are you?
