Brand spanking new!!

I am brand new to the vegan lifestyle, not even a week in. I'm enjoying my new lifestyle change. But I have been waking up with migraines for this couple of days now and I normally get them because of the weather but I'm pretty sure it's because I am NOT getting enough calories in. Can you guys give me any advice to make sure I get enough calories in? I think I'm getting less than 1000 which is really really bad. Also if I have any mommies out there any advice about transitioning my children to at least eat some more veggies and slowly get them in all the way to veganism?

Hi Sarah and welcome! You're in the right place here.

It is really common to accidentally get too few calories when beginning veganism. It's good that you realized that was the issue.

First go run and make some oatmeal with peanut butter, raisins, other fruit, a bit of salt and sweetener. Eat it! and drink a glass of orange or apple juice with it. Make enough for the kids, I would add extra sugar to theirs or maybe a swirl of jam on top.

So what did you eat for meals before transitioning? What country are you in, so we can give specifics? Don't worry, you can do this, there is just a learning curve, and no one learns well when hungry

Good, that app helps people a lot! Just don't get too caught up in getting 100 percent of each nutrient every day. Over a week averaging is a better gauge.

This is a bunch of classic southern foods made vegan, for when you get a craving http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-...ds-made-vegan/

I don't know if it's your case, but a lot of people who go vegan make this mistake...don't eat salads as main meals. Focus on things like rice, pasta, potatoes, or quinoa, with some legumes and vegetables for main meals.

Hi Sarah and welcome!

You need to visit a few awesome vegan recipe sites like Post Punk Kitchen, Vegweb, Vegan Dad, Hell Yeah It's Vegan, Oh She Glows. You will never again have a problem getting in enough calories as a vegan lol. Try some pasta with hummus and roasted veggies mixed in. I love to roast red peppers, yellow squash, mushrooms, pineapple, chickpeas, zucchini, tomatoes. Or try steaming and then sauteing some chopped sweet potato, black beans, and kale with curry powder and coconut milk. If nothing else, smoothies loaded with banana, avocado, leafy greens, ground flaxseeds or chia seeds, more fruit, lots of water or plant milk is a great start to the day and full of nutrient dense energy!
