Terrorist attack on UK. But of all places, who would have ever figured it would come from Iceland?

That's a bit distasteful to suck people in with that thread title - I genuinely thought people may have been hurt for a minute.

when it comes to terrorism laws, the UK government always say "I've started, so I'll finish"

That response was even sadder than your first, which makes the infraction I'm expecting so worth it.

Who's giving you an infraction?

In revenge, Uncle Gordo has frozen Icelandic funds in UK banks. The UK will get their cash by hook or by crook!

I agree with the other posts as well. Terrorism is not something you should be joking about.

British - Icelandic hostilities are nothing new. During the Cod Wars (1958, 1972-73 and 1975-76) there were incidents of a much more physical and serious nature than what is going on now:

Quote:

In the Icelandic account, when ordered to leave Icelandic territorial waters by Ãór´s commander the three tugboats initially complied. But around two nautical miles (4 km) from the coast the Star Aquarius allegedly veered to starboard and hit Ãórs port side as the Coast Guards attempted to overtake the Star Aquarius . Even as Ãór increased speed, the Lloydsman again collided with its port side. The Ãór had suffered considerable damage by these hits so when the Star Aquarius came about, a blank round was fired from Ãór. This didn't deter the Star Aquarius as it hit Ãór a second time. Another shot was fired from Ãór as a result, this time a live round that hit Star Aquarius's bow. After that the tug-boats retreated.

[...]

Britain deployed a total of 22 frigates against the four Icelandic patrol vessels V/s Ãðinn, V/s Ãór, V/s Týr and V/s Ãgir as well as two armed trawlers V/s Baldur and V/s Ver.[8][9] The Icelandic government tried to acquire U.S. Asheville class gunboats, and when denied by the American government they tried to get Soviet Mirka class frigates. In addition to the frigates, the United Kingdom also deployed a total seven supply ships, nine tug-boats, and three support ships to protect its fishing trawlers, although only six to nine of these vessels were on deployment at any one time. [9]

A more serious turn of events came when Iceland threatened closure of the NATO base at KeflavÃ*k, which would, in the military perception of the time, have severely impaired NATO's ability to defend the Atlantic Ocean from the Soviet Union. As a result, the British government agreed to have its fishermen stay outside Iceland's 200 nautical mile (370 km) exclusion zone without a specific agreement.

There's a lot more to this, and it's an interesting read that most people don't know about:

I no longer post here after VB was sold in 2012. (See my profile page for details.)

Thank you to the mod who changed the title of this thread. It will save others experiencing that awful feeling I did when I saw the original one. (The London bombings are still pretty fresh in my mind).

My sincerest apologies. I don't know why I assumed that no one of average intelligence would look to the heap for breaking headline news.

The BBC has an interesting take on wanker.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/edit...ge/index.shtml

Quote:

The following examples indicate the differing offensiveness of language. It is by no means definitive. If in doubt consult a senior editorial figure within your department or Editorial Policy:

The most offensive language includes terms such as ****, mother****er and **** (which are subject to mandatory referrals); others such as ********er and ****** are also extremely offensive to audiences.

Moderately offensive language includes terms such as wanker, pussy, *******, etc. Care should be taken with using moderately offensive terms and they are almost certain to generate complaints if used in pre-watershed programmes.

I wonder - can we assume that since it appears to be okay with the mods to call someone a 'wanker' multiple times, then similar offensive pejoratives also get a pass?

Maybe one of the mods can clarify.

It's a big man who can admit to mistakes. You are obviously not one.

When one sees a headline about a terrorist attack in one's home country, one doesn't tend to notice which subsection of the forum it's in.

Perhaps you'd prefer 'merchant banker', 'ravi shankar' or 'kuwaiti tanker'?

(In any event, it's not nearly as bad as calling someone 'Yankee Trash!')

Well, regardless of the subsection I'm kind of guessing most people don't turn to VB for their breaking news updates.

Well, it couldn't be worse than relying on the Dirty Digger!

I don't rely on my neighbours for breaking news but if one of them told me that there had been another London bombing it would still cause me some considerable concern. I really don't see why it's so hard for some people to understand.

I'll make one more attempt to explain (Even though you've already stated that you don't know what it's about).

I saw a thread title about a terrorist attack on the UK, which caused me some concern, just as if you were living overseas and saw a headline about a terrorist attack in Australia, you might be concerned about your friends and relatives.

Why do you have to continue to be so nasty?

Isn't this thread supposed to be about banks?

You're a yob or you're a wanker -

Take your ****ing choice

So who is your favourite genius

James Hird or James Joyce?

You ever seen a live performance?

Join the wanker club

You thought I meant table top dancing?

You're a yobbo, bub

What are ya? Yob or wanker?

Wankers once used mobile phones

But now that's sorta changing

And yobs once lived in cottage homes -

Ain't social change amazing?

If a yob and wanker want a girl

The wanker guy will get her -

Both of them are equally ugly

But the wanker hides it better

What are ya? Yob or wanker?

A wanker fights inequality

And for people's rights;

A wanker fights class prejudice

A yobbo just fights

Yob or wanker - wanker or yob

Pass me the brush to tar ya:

Make your choice then live your life;

Come on pal, what are ya?
