That's not bad though... I think most people wouldn't catch on to that immediately.

My poor niece was marginally spared the weird name... it's still odd, but it could have been worse. See, my sister's name is Angel. She thought it would be "cute" to name her daughter Heaven. In honor of our dad who passed away, she wanted her middle name to be Leigh.

Heaven Leigh. Yeah.

So we convinced her to find some way to spare the poor child from this cheesetastic name.... and we end up with Nevaeh Leigh. Better, but even when Neal McCoy himself pulled my niece on stage at a concert last night he asked her name and then looked over at my sister and said, "What the h*** kind of name is that?!"

On topic... While I'd hate to see the government take over our right to name our kids, it would be nice to see parents use a bit more discretion in the matter. Sex Fruit? Seriously?

I'd rather be called Sex Fruit than No 16 Bus Shelter.

Er... maybe it's a reference to the fact that the child is the "fruit" (ie. the produce) of their parents' activities? That's all I can think of, anyway.

Holy wow, we must be using some wildly different search engines because my first page of Google images... um... yeah. Didn't know fruit could do that.

That's what I was going to say...

Fruit of the Womb.

I kind of like the name Sex Fruit. But it's the kind of joke name you'd want to call your significant other. Kind of like Sex Beast or Itallian Stallion kind of thing. No way would I name a child that. Not an animal, either.

A British TV Personality Paula Yates and Irish singere/songwritier 'Bob' Geldof have three daughters.

And I thought my parents were bad for really wanting to name me Epiphany.

I can't believe how stupid some people are...

I was thinking the same thing =P Hehehe, for a kid, it is obviously ridiculous... but they name sounds almost cute as a joke name... maybe I should try it out... (or not... XD)

At work I've encountered some kids with some rather unusual names. One child has the exact same first and last name. I've also noticed in some of the really big families, the older kids will have somewhat normal names but as you go on down the line, the names get more and more bizarre. Like the parents gave up trying and just began picking verbs and adjectives instead.

Most of the parents have "issues," to say the least.

slops, gloops, and gruels.

i wonder now, if the names i have picked out in my head for my hypothetical future children would be considered "strange" or abnormal. or even worthy of being goverment denied!

Uh, a child is "sex fruit"- literally- the "fruit" of sex, as in the "fruit of my loins", the result of planting ones' seed etc.

I was mulling over "Drezden" or "Zephyr" at one point.

I thought this was only a celebrity phenomenon - and I just really hope poor little Number 16 Bus Shelter wasn't so named because of where they were conceived.

Is there any good reason to name someone Number 16 Bus Shelter though?

lol No, but that would just add insult to injury, and a new element of class to this whole thing, wouldn't it? I can just hear Maury talking to Bus Shelter now...

Some people just shouldn't procreate, is what is boils down to for me. If you can't think ahead and provide your child with a good future, than you shouldn't have kids.

So how should a naming law be phrased? Should there be a list of approved names? Should it be left up to the whimsy of a judge or registrar? I'm not comfortable with where either of those could lead.

you've zeroed in on the problem. the standard by which 'weird' and 'offensive' are to be judged is very arbitrary. yeah, i agree that some names would be harmful to the kid because social interactions would often be embarassing and i am appalled that some loser would want to saddle their child with number 16 bus shelter as a name, but a legal standard would be awfully hard to come up with. without some legal standard however, then the decision is left up to the discretion of some city or county official. what if they find some names favored by different cultures to be 'weird'? or, find a harmless but unusual name to be offensive somehow? difficult problem for sure.

people should be allowed to name their children WHATEVER they want, and then deal with it later if it turns out bad. On a partially related note, I wanted to name our dog that we got a long time ago Jesus, or perhaps Cogwheel, even Dog or Asskicker. Doesn't matter what the name is.
