I have read that some people speculate that in ancient Greece the age was more like 17-18, for boys (they didn't write a lot about girls) but I think that is just speculation, and I don't really believe it. More likely they just mean that that is when they are considered not children.

BTW, is this on topic? Or should we be talking about the poor raped child. That is really awful.

It´s a closely-related topic that helps some understand how the story in the OP is possible. On-topic enough for me. If the discussion wanders to genital mutilation or whatever else again, that would be off-topic.

Q: How many poets does it take to change a light bulb? A: 1001...one to change the bulb, 1000 to say it's already been done.

I imagine it isn't something that comes up a lot in mixed company. Don't feel bad.

but to get back to the serious business of posting on the Heap....

I was 12 when I had my first period and my sister was also 12, both of us were about 12 1/2 or so.

10 is kind of young but not unheard of, 11 is fairly common.

eta: I just read at a further link to the story that she became pregnant at 9...whoa. apparently people didn't know she was pregnant until just before she gave birth...I was wondering why the pregnancy was allowed to come to term in view of her age and the rape, etc., so that is apparently the reason.

also, it's possible to get pregnant without ever having had a period in your life... but only after a certain point age-wise (I think usually after 8 at the earliest). It's rare but not impossible.

Do you mean at the point right before their first periods (their first ovulation prior to their first menstruation), or can girls be fertile before showing signs of menses? How?

She is safe until she starts having sex, and if she is having sex prior to menstruation, there might be other things going on...

^^Haha.

If my husband and I had boys, I would request that he gets the old clip and burn also.

Being a woman, I know boys are easier.

I'm not sure about specifics, but I do know it's possible. When I have more energy I'll go re-read the text book about it and let you know.

Plus adult women can have weirdness going on where they never get periods but still get pregnant.

^^^ yep, women can ovulate without menstruating- its not common though.

also, you gotta remember that the period is the end of the cycle... its triggered by not becoming pregnant after ovulation. so theoretically you can ovulate earlier in the month before your first ever period is gonna come, get pregnant, and then as a result not get that first period.

ovulation is sometimes a bit wonky in young girls though- the body can take a while to get into a nice routine.

Ovulation=menstruation. Without menstruation ovulation is non existent, except the one ovulation prior to the first period. That happens 14 days before they start to menstruate. Eggs aren't released until that initial ovulation occurs.

I am not sure what you mean by weirdness, but woman can still ovulate without menstruation in a case such as a breast feeding woman. This has to do with small amounts of estrogen still being released.
