The mere idea is stomach-churning: creating food from human feces.

But researchers in Japan say they have done just that. They have synthesized meat from proteins found in human waste, according to news reports.

I think the real question is: Will anyone eat it?

Why do scientists waste their time doing crap like this?

Blegh gross, but they call it meat because they are isolating proteins, but could they make vegetarian or vegan poop meat? lol eww doesn't matter to me, i'll stick to fresh vegetables and fruits.

I see no problem with it ethically and see it as a plus environmentally. However, those do not apply due to the atonishingly large EEW factor.

Enjoying the view over at http://forum.veggieviews.com/

From what I read, it's not meat grown with poop as a nutrient. It's created from human poop. Wouldn't that be a form of cannibalism?

No one would ever go for it - except maybe fecalpheliacs.

And... doesn't all food have poop in it? What is fertilizer made of?

Safe? probably. Will I even contemplate trying it? Hell no.

If it's got all the same nutrients, perhaps it can become pet food. Probably don't though.

[geek] Funny enough, this is how Star Trek envisioned it.

The interstellar ships recycled the passengers' wastes products and recombined them into food. [/geek]

If they can extract enough amino acids from human feces to make meat from them that's pretty good evidence that meat is not as well digested by humans as most people dream it is.

Quote:
The Japanese researchers isolated proteins from bacteria in sewage. The poop-meat concoction is prepared by extracting the basic elements of food — protein, carbohydrates and fats — and recombining them.
The meat is made from 63 percent proteins, 25 percent carbohydrates, 3 percent lipids and 9 percent minerals, according to Digital Trends. Soy protein is added to the mix to increase the flavor, and food coloring is used to make the product appear red.

Sounds like Quorn.

Well it's not like there's diseases such as cancer, AIDS, etc out there that need to be focused on or anything.

My dog already eats her own poop and cat's poop. She doesn't need more poop in her diet. She is already full of sh*t.

I don't know if you have seen it but it's so gross-

http://www.digitaltrends.com/interna...-out-of-feces/

Who would really eat this? Every time I think I might want to eat meat again I will watch this - for will we really know if the meat is real or made out poo. I wonder how easy it would be to mix it in with real meat?

Yes because the finished product won't say anything about it coming from poop. Look at red food coloring carmine. The average person doesn't know it comes from crushed Beatles and they still eat it. I've eve told people where it comes from and they said how gross it was but continued to eat it. Even if you told them where it came from they probably wouldn't believe you.

I don't know whether this was an intentional or unintentional pun: either way, it's pretty good!

Aside from the fact that this is a hoax, I think I'd try it.
