Personally, I love it.

1. I do have a filter at work and would not be able check in at VB if the filter was not in place. (At lunch time, of course)

2. I dislike profanity in a public forum. It is really a turn off to have it used so casually. I have been known to drop profanity bombs, but always put a filter on my mouth in certain situations out of respect for others. And it always offends me when someone who I have just met assumes that that type of low speech is acceptable.

What over-the-top response? I don't have a problem with the filter, I'd just like to know what bypassing the filter means.

Also, I wouldn't say I love the filter. But I have had a good relationship with it. (Until today, anyway.)

If it means I can log in at work, I like the filter.

OK, here is the deal with the filter:

Please just type out whatever word it is you intend to use. The filter will change it to asterisks if it is on the list of words to be filtered. Insertion of letters or certain symbols into the word can be problematic in certain cases and can encourage others to post in a similar manner, leading us to have a higher quantity of problematic filter bypasses. Transposed letters and symbols are not caught by the VB filter, but they can be caught by more sophisticated filters and we just want to make sure the VB is as accessible to as many as possible. The filter is in effect to keep VB from being blocked from universities, schools, work places, and public Internet service providers (libraries, trains, hotels etc).

As far as the thread that started this confusion, the thread title was incorrectly edited and it has been changed.

I like the filter too. At my university, which had 16/17 year olds on campus as well as 18+, blocked the slut thread for having slut in the title. I think that's pretty extreme but most workplaces will block something with strong curse words in the URL and VB has a very limited number of words on the filter. Having four words asterisked out is not an inconvenience to anyone IMO and means that more people can access VB on networks.

Where I used to work, any news articles that referred to sexual assault were blocked because of the word 'sex' in them.

At my workplace, as far as I can tell, the two words blocked in URLs are "sex" and "child". I really hope there wasn't a problem with people looking at child porn in the past

So, in other words, if I want to use the word "****", I just type it and let the filter take care of it?

ETA: O.K. - I see that it worked.

In all fairness, the filter has been going through a tough time and it just hasn't been itself lately.

Yeah even though the filter can be a real ******* sometimes, I figure I have to give it some slack and not start a fight every time, which will just add to the difficult **** it is going through right now.

When I first came onto this forum I found it really difficult to avoid swearing! I can understand the reasons behind the filter though.

You get better gas mileage if you have a clean filter.

I understand why the filter is needed but at the same time I really dislike how it edits out the entire word most of the time.

One I wanted to use a word in which a syllable appeared with a voiceless postaveolar fricative followed by a voiced unrounded centered vowel, ending with a voicelss alveolar plosive in it (∫It). It got filtered so my schitakes became ****akes. That was not very helpful in communicating my meaning.

We've had the filter type ****ake when members misspell the mushroom.

Oh, I didn't know that was the preferred spelling. Meriam-Webster gives the way I spelled it as a variant. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dicti...0&t=1299459402

I've also had problems with some other words, especially words with the three letters that refer to somebody's bottom in them. I don't remember which, however.

Shiitake is spelled correctly. ****ake is not.

I would disagree. Most online dictionaries I have checked list both as accurate spellings. They are just two different spellings for the same word. Like the difference between doughnut and donut, thru and through, or lite and light.

Then again I never have been a supporter of orthographic dogmatism.

I did get a bit annoyed with the filter when I tried to post a link to a tea house in Germany and it got asterisked because the name of the place is TUSH I T A and it didn't like the middle of the name...
