(Reuters) - Iran has banned the production of Valentine's Day gifts and any promotion of the day celebrating romantic love to combat what it sees as a spread of Western culture, Iranian media reported.

The February 14 celebration named after a Christian saint is not officially banned but hardliners have repeatedly warned about the corruptive spread of Western values. Under Iran's Islamic law, unmarried couples are not allowed to mingle.

The printing works owners' union issued an instruction on the ban, imposed by Iranian authorities, covering gifts such as cards, boxes with the symbols of hearts and red roses.

They should ban them here too because they're just a moneymaking scheme.

Some little guy on a factory floor who's just like you and me gets paid to make those cards, though. If they're made in America I'm fine with it.

Yeah but probably like 90% or so (just a guestimate) are not.

As an atheist, all celebrations are pretty meaningless to me, and therefore could be seen as as "just a moneymaking scheme" but I think there's something lovley about celebrations nonetheless. They're a time to enjoy all the lovley things in life and spoil our loved ones, I think that's lovley So I spend money on someone I love, big whoop, makes him happy, makes me happy Most people buy eachother gifts that aren't valentines day specific anyway.

Celebrations like this are worthless, and the factories making these things should be put to good use, rather than producing stuff that ends up destroying the earth. I totally get that someone needs a job, but such things are pointless, and V-Day especially is just promoted by the card companies and restaurants to pick up after the Janurary belt-tightening.

+1

All holidays are over commercialized and it would be great if we stopped wasting resources on all of them. Getting a gift on Valentines day (or any other holiday) just because its expected makes it pretty meaningless. I'd rather have my SO get me something any other time 'just because he was thinking about me' and not because a retailer or commercial told him he should. Now that would mean something.

Good to see Iranian trashcans and landfills won't be filled with red wrapping paper on Feb 15th.

wow, you are all missing the point! I agree that it's a pointless holiday, and over-commercialism has ruined the sentiment it was supposed to have, and that it's a day made-up by Hallmark so they can sell more cards!

However the point is that the Iranian ppl don't have the freedom to accept or reject such a celebration or concept, as you do! They don't get the chance to tell their lovers "I love you" or "Valentines is for losers" or "I choo choo chose you" or anything for that matter! They don't even get the chance to buy f'n roses for their sick mother or their dead mother's grave!

What do you think "Authorities will take legal action against those who ignore the ban." means? Do you think they will sue them, or take them to prison? Considering all the ppl that get tortured, imprisoned and even hanged for having pre-marital sex, I am thinking it's the latter!

:sigh:

I didn't miss the point at all, I just wasn't in the mood to address it.

maybe it's not such a bad thing for a country to try and preserve it's cultural history. they did suggest a similar iranian holiday instead.

well all holidays are worthless and are a profit for card companies. but if people who celebrate it are happy thats all that matters. i prefer valentines day to the birthday of some 2011 year old dude (which isn't even on the right date) whom i didn't know

not surprising that its banned there. this is like one of the least things to worry about banning, lol. although it is sad that people are taking away all the freedoms

thanks for bringing up a point like that, which is usually so overlooked...

silly and useless, who cares, does anyone actually celebrate (christian) feast of st valentine? but you know, whatever.

it is nice when countries try to preserve their culture. it is sad when they do it by banning something. imagine the reactions there would be if countries like Russia, France, Italy etc. would ban some cultural stuff from let's say Middle Eastern or Asian countries

I thought Valentine's day was a Pagan Holiday anyhow? This is not a Christian holiday then some folks think it is. However, that is what I got out of a book I am reading but whom knows. Valentine's day week I share people with candy hearts and heart shaped cards and say I love. Matter in fact my mom's birthday is 7 days prior to Valentine's day so it gives me an excuse to get her a heart shaped Birthday cake. Like I said about Halloween and Christmas and also Easter these Holidays are what you make of them.
