I saw the video. He didn't seem drunk. I don't know where the accusation comes from.

Perhaps I missed something.

He doesn't seem drunk to me.

WASHINGTON Montana Sen. Max Baucus, the lawmaker at the center of the congressional health care reform debate, finds himself in the middle of another squall: He's the subject of an anonymous accusation that he was drunk while speaking on the Senate floor last week a claim the senator adamantly denies...

...an anonymous person using the Internet moniker "SocialistsSteal" posted a five-minute, 39-second video clip of the senator's speech on You Tube headlined, "Senator Max Baucus Drunk/intoxicated on Senate Floor." The clip went viral, linked by a number of conservative Web sites, including the Drudge Report.

SocialistsSteal's profile page describes the poster as a 40-year-old from Carson City, Nev., who supports 2008 presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and lists "Crusader Against Fascism and Socialism Crap" under occupation.

Baucus' office vehemently denied the charge of intoxication and said it shows how visceral the debate over health care reform has become.

"When his friend of 30 years, Ted Kennedy, with whom he had fought so hard to provide health care to children, was being used as a cheap foil to oppose health care reform, Sen. Baucus gave a passionate defense," Baucus spokesman Ty Matsdorf said in a statement issued Monday.

"Unfortunately, those who want to kill any meaningful reform turned it into an unfounded, untrue, personal-smear Internet rumor. This is beyond the pale, and this type of gutter politics has no place in the public sphere," Matsdorf said...

I honestly couldn't tell whether he was drunk or not (he did seem a little incoherent to me) but I wanted to see what everybody else's take was on it.

The right-wing swiftboating continues...

Where's the proof; oh wait, nobody cares about proof or remembers when things are later squashed as bunk. They only remember the smears, the sound-bytes.

Not everyone is a fluid speaker. That's no reason to go spreading accusations. These people, right or wrong on this issue, were keeping long and late hours. It's easy to isolate poor speaking performances from the hours of CSPAN video to turn viral. Look at what the last prez gave us over 8 years.

So I guess the real complaint is that the right learned something from the left, and now the left is upset 'cause turn-about isn't fair play?

If you're really trying to sell the idea that this is the right employing trickery of the left, I'm not buying & good luck!

(While I'll always contend that both hands are of the same head, the right one is near-always quicker to employ such tactics.)

This is the sort of diversion & division that both sides prosper from anyway.

The right are certainly a little more constrained simply by social norms, so it's not exactly the same. For instance, while lots of folks thought this was a funny meme:

If the same exact comparison was made today, it would immediately be decried as racism all around. So few are willing to go there.

I agree, there seems to be quite a double standard with regards to mud slinging just because we have a black president, which I find in itself to be a pretty racist concept, since the president can't be criticized or joked on without someone bringing the color of his skin into the equation, and THAT is discrimination.

Well, it is good to know that when I want to get my fill of babbling drunks, I can just go watch C-Span and watch my tax dollars at work instead of enduring time in a bar.

*Will tactfully never mention again being a Montana resident for a few years*

There's video of this type, featuring various members of Congress, circulating all the time. For example, here's one of Boehner, sounding drunk, as he breaks into tears (which is apparently a not unusual occurrence): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSF4O8BYq4s

Some of these guys have voices that are close to the stereotypical "drunk" voice of caricature; unless you know them well enough to know what they normally sound like, it's jumping to conclusions to claim that they're drunk.
