The idea of me or my wife or my kids dying scares the crap out of me

I really can't get my head around it and sometimes I'm permanently fixated on trying to figure it out

I can't let my mind go anywhere near these thoughts either.

yup. Last week, the thought of my better half passing crossed my mind. Very unsettling. I would fall apart completely. I can't even go there with my kids.

As an atheist, I beleive that this life is it, ...so the longer the better.

I want to die in a blaze of glory 5 billion years from now (when scientists believe the sun will go supernova.)

Happiness is not the result of a mathematical equation comparing the good times and bad times someone has had. It is a state of mind.

There's a possibility I might in the not too distant future, as long as I don't suffer too much then I'm ok with it, I don't fear what happens after I die since when my brain activity ceases so do any worries and concerns.

I'm hoping for further existence beyond this life for everyone (well, maybe I wouldn't get too bent-out-of-shape if truly evil entities were annihilated). But this existence is all I know about. I'm not sure I can explain why annihilation would scare me so much... it's not like I would know about it once it happened to me.

of course i don't want to die. i'd rather lay in a bed not knowing where i am, pooping and peeing all over myself 24/7, have a stomach tube running around the clock and watch my heels rot off while i develop pressure ulcers big enough to fit your fist into. i'm here to tell you that tube feeding formula makes for great smelling pasty poop! and your mouth gets nice and leathery dry. the lucky ones last a long time like this. terry schavio was on her way to super stardom when that idiot husband of hers had her murdered.

you haven't really started living until you get here! why would anyone want to die when they can have this?

Nooooo. My husband is a horrible cook! My kids would eat cake for breakfast and cookies for lunch and cereal for dinner.

^I can't let that happen to my kids.

They'd make a good sacrifice. zombies would eat on them for much longer, possibly saving someone else's life. A worthy sacrifice.

Yeah I'd be dead though. But I'm sure my husband would roll the heaviest out on the lawn to distract them [zombies] and put the other one in a wheelbarrow and run away. He'd probably save the other one for a diversion in the future.

Gosh that sounds awful. See I can't die, my children need me.

I want to die. Not immediately, I feel like I have many things left to do first, especially have a child, but I do not fear death. I don't believe physical death is the end at all. Our lives on earth are just short little sojourns we take to learn lessons and advance our soul's growth. It's not the end all and be all of existence.

I don't think the universe wastes anything. Everything is recycled in the earth and I think it's the same when we die.

Exactly, death may not be good news for the people involved but on the other hand it's party time for all the little worms.

I want to die someday, of course. Immortality holds no charm for me. There needs to be an end to Earthly existence. When my time comes I'll go willingly and with a smile

Yes, I want to die eventually. Not any time soon, though!

Eternal life is a naive desire. Given infinite time you would experience every experience infinitely.. it would be hell! I try to see mortality as a gift, that our life should end before we grow weary of it. The only part that I am worried about is not making the most of the time I have, I want to make some positive impression this world.

Why do you want to be dead at 60 specifically?

There's something poetic about being stardust. The atoms we are made from have been through several stars, when our star dies they will enrich the interstellar medium and create more stars - maybe even resulting in more life?

I have enjoyed reading this thread. Hearing other people talk about this issue makes me feel a bit better. I'm still considering seeing a therapist or something about it, because I truly do think about my own mortality every single day. In the last week, at least once every waking hour. This is no way to live. It's possible I have some sort of anxiety disorder or something....and I'm afraid the inability to sleep will turn me into an alcoholic.
