"Deadly Force" by April Witt

Source: The Washington Post Magazine

"What a SWAT team did to Cheye Calvo's family may seem extreme. But decades into America's war on drugs, it's business as usual."

"He saw Payton slumped on the living room floor near the threshold to the kitchen. 'I knew he was bleeding,' Cheye recalled. 'I knew he had been shot. Nothing was processing. I saw Georgia, Payton, blood. No Chase.' "

I'm just completely overwhelmed by this article. I can't believe that this kind of thing happened. I know it happens every day, but I can't help thinking about those poor dogs.

It's stories like this that make me grateful that I live in the Netherlands (where police officers wear guns for self defence only!) and not in the USA.

Although I'm sorry about the dogs, it goes way further than that. Terrorizing people over some weed, how mentally retarded can you be? It's to be expected from a country where people vote for Bush

Wow, I just read that from beginning to end and I'm completely speechless.

I saw this in the paper yesterday and it almost had me in tears. I just can't even imagine how painful this must be for the family. I just have this mental image of these 2 sweet, hyper dogs just running around trying to figure out what's going on...and then...boom. And if this can happen at the mayor's home, then what about the rest of us?
