Hi, I went to a massage therapist who works out of his home. This is my first visit to a massage therapist. I went there as a referral from my chiropractor to help with an injury recovery so I thought it's more like a medical service (you just pay a fee). Then my friend told me that it's more like getting a haircut and that you are supposed to tip. Is this true? How much are you supposed to tip if the massage costs say $65? Also, does it matter that he works for himself (i.e. he is not on a salary through a company) Thanks!

(This is in the US; I know the customs in other countries are different.)

Tipping isn't necessary...but it's appreciated.

Tipping anyone is always optional.

It is something that people usually do though, just as with servers, nail care providers, and hairdressers.

I am a massage therapist and am tipped 99% of the time. I don't expect it, I NEVER would automatically add one on or suggest that people leave one. That being said, I usually am tipped 20% (minimum) and up.

I just finished school for massage therapy and am completing my licensing process now. As far as tipping goes, it is always optional and naturally, is appreciated. Especially in today's economy, no one is going to question your reasons for tipping not tipping. If you feel your therapist did an especially good job addressing your issues, you may choose to tip.
