WARNING: Possible Lord of the Rings spoilers (like anyone doesn't already know the story...)

Well I just took a glance at the "Was Gandalf a vegan?" thread, and I must say, Lord of the Rings really get's me going! On page 2, Iria posted
Quote:
Sam talks about eating rabbit in the movie, so the hobbits are out.

This reminded me, and I want some outside opinions, that I think Samwise the character was not exemplary of kindness or Hobbit hospitality at all. My main gripe was his treatment of Gollum, which I believe led to Gollum "giving in" to the power of the ring and turning against the hobbits near the end. I must say, if it weren't for Samwise's mistreatment of the poor guy, Smeagol would have remained rehabilitated and fully on his way to destorying "the precious" when the time came.

Thoughts??

EDIT: Well I blew the title on this thread... can a mod replace "Smawise" with "Samwise?" Thanks!

I've read the books but haven't watched the movies. I don't recall anyone eating rabbits in the books -- but it's been awhile since I've read them.

No, Smeagol was under the control of the One Ring all along. He'd had it for hundreds of years, don't forget, longer than any other mortal, and even Frodo was completely under the power of the Ring at the end, after only having it in his possession for a short while.

I think they called them coneys in the book. But yeah, Gollum went around and hunted for them a few times, and I do remember that stew. Gollum got angry when he found out they were going to cook them, and Sam told him how good fish and chips are, which made him even more disgusted, at the idea of scorching "nice fissssssh".

Coney may also refer to or recall several types of animals:

* Cuban Coney, an extinct rodent

* Coney, a nickname for the Pika (a distant cousin of the rabbit)

* Coney, a translation of the Hebrew Bible word שָּׁפָן (shaphan), more accurately rendered "hyrax" (a rodent-like member of the suborder Afrotheria)

* Coney, the common name for Cephalopholis fulva, a grouper fish

* Coney catching, a term for confidence trick in Elizabethan English

* Coney, a representation of a rabbit in heraldry; see Charge (heraldry)

Well duh, Frodo fed him meat every night.

...I'm sorry, I really couldn't resist. Neither could Smawise, though.

1. Rude and disrespectful; impudent.

2. Lively and spirited; jaunty.

3. Stylish; chic: a sassy little hat.

Which kind of sassy?

I would make a nice hat.
