I heard an idea of getting Fair Trade items at The Hunger Site for gifts. You gift the recipient, support the artists in developing countries, and the profit goes to feed the hungry.

What other unique gift giving ideas have you come up with?

It doesn't have to be something fancy. For example, when I was unemployed many of my friends received crocheted hats and scarves.

This was originally blog, but I had a request to open a thread to encourage more responses...so I did.

Way to make me think this thread was going to be spam.

I've donated to many organizations on behalf of people I know might find that gift more meaningful than yet another trinket.

But if they just have to have something:

Ten Thousand Villages is a line of products run by Mennonite Central Committee. People in Third World countries make these items, generally wood decor, jewelry, toys and small musical instruments. They have a website.

Other options:

Gift certificates for a homemade meal made by you

Gift certificates for any number of things you're pledging to do, like housecleaning for them, lawn mowing for them, free backrubs whenever they want, etc.

Q: How many poets does it take to change a light bulb? A: 1001...one to change the bulb, 1000 to say it's already been done.

I really enjoy sewing, so I usually make something out of fabric. All of my friends and family will be receiving hand made cushions for xmas this year, each reflecting their own personalities.

That sounds so nice I truly love receiving handmade gifts. My aunt makes cold pressed soaps that I look forward to every year.
