Probably the most ridiculous asinine thing I think our president has done. In terms of our calender, anyway.

Quote:
The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." This Loyalty Day, and throughout the year, I ask all Americans to join me in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2007, as Loyalty Day. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in this national observance and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day as a symbol of pride in our Nation.

White House

This is actually not something new.

Quote:
The holiday was first observed in 1921[1] as "Americanization Day,"[2] and was intended to counterbalance the celebration of the Labour Day on May Day May 1, which was perceived as communist.

[...]

In 2007 President George W. Bush issued an official proclamation of the May 1st, 2007 Loyalty Day in accordance with the 1958 Congressional declaration[5], as have many of his predecessors.

I no longer post here after VB was sold in 2012. (See my profile page for details.)

Ah, you beat me to it. I've been interested in May Day since I was a kiddo, and can remember chuckling about "Americanization Day". I mean, really, can we be more 1984?

please tell me this holiday will be celebrated by little girls dancing round a big maypole, weaving ribbons into pretty patterns, while wearing masks of the faces of US presidents past and present.

Oh my gosh. That is too humorous.

They have some Maypole dancing in the town where my folks live. I'll have to suggest the masks for next year.

I asked some people what they thought about this yesterday.

One of them says: "I like the concept, but I don't think it will work."

... I was speechless ...

duh, What is July 4th for then? To make England angry every year? I thought it was to celebrate love of our country.

No, Life, Independence Day is to make the fireworks distributors happy.

Yes.

Seriously. Independence Day has historic importance for the United States. Loyalty Day is just some punk-ass pseudo holiday that Congress made up back in the 50s because they were scared of the Commies.

I know! I know! We should use Loyalty Day as an excuse to only be loyal one day a year!

I so enjoy giving the government a hard time especially after paying taxes, hearing death totals, watching an idiot wade waist deep through a pig stye of his own making, and I don't need a man who needs to dump the mud out of boots to tell me to be loyal.

Perhaps we can celebrate by joining in loyalty to a more vast intra-labor coalition, in opposition to capitalism and nation-states.
