I was just wondering, this has probably been mentioned before, but there are a LOT of inactive people on these boards (at the moment, I can see 30 logged in members and 623 guests...).

Also, at the time of this writing, there are 9086 members that have posted nothing and 1883 members that have only posted once...

These may be people who flat out don't like to post and simply 'lurk' on the boards (I used to lurk for about a month before I joined this board, no idea why...).

Not really much else to say, just thought I'd bring the topic up...

Lots of people lurk or just don't have anything to say. I suspect others just come here for info or recipes.

Others probably come for the "never a dull moment" atmosphere that pervades here most of the time.

I lurked for about a month as well. For me it was because I'd never done the whole internet forum thing and was all freaked out about it. Took me a while to realise that 1. Most people here are usually very kind, and 2. Those who aren't can't actually get me.

I lurk a lot and I've been a member for a few years, but I rarely post. I need to feel that I have a good point to make before a post, and that doesn't happen very often!

"never a dull moment"

There are many folks who sign up, and then are never heard from again after that day. Perhaps they were expecting dancing girls and vodka martinis or something.

That said, there are many times when there are a couple of hundred folks on the board. Also, there are over 1000 members with a 100+ plus. Despite a lot of lurkers, the board's pretty heavily used.

And I feel so used.

With all the upgrades to bigger servers and all though, wouldn't it be beneficial to somehow delete all those hundreds and hundreds of accounts where the person signs up and then never ever visits again (maybe like, after three months or so?).

I'm a member of several other forums and they all send me an e-mail if I haven't been active or signed in for X months. I don't have to post, I can lurk all I want, just need to sign in every so often...

Just wondered why something similar wasn't in place here.

I was gone for a while. I left because the same people were argueing the same things over and over. It was quite easy to guess how certain people would react to certain issues. No sense in reading the posts

But now enough time has past and there is "fresh blood" again at VB.

I posted for a while and then stopped for a while.

Life changes and people get busy, etc. I have been going through a year-long transition where I haven't been good at keeping up on much of anything but lately I got back on and have completely redone my interweb ID. Lolz.

Sometimes people just ... forget. My reminder was the other day when my beau bought me Vegan With A Vengeance. I have found so much help and refuge here. These boards rock.

"fresh blood" Great. Maybe now we can decide once and for all if honey is vegan and whether porn is the reason for all the demise of civilization.

Honey is not vegan, unless it is being used in porn.

"fresh blood" was dry humor... I forgot that I need to include smiley faces just in case someone may take me seriously.

Over-sensitive /knee jerk reactions are one of my pet peeves about VB. Another reason why I took a break.

Beancounter, I thought I may have held the record for the least amount of posts for a VB old schooler until I saw yours You should get an award for that.

Funny you should mention that. When I reached my 100th post, I made an "annoucement" and called people loosers for posting so much "get a life", etc.

Luckily, I used smiley faces and no one took me seriously...

Easy there, tiger. Pretty clear IAJ was making a joke about the long running debates at VB getting rehashed.

Might want to unwad the panties just a teeny bit.

Maybe we should delete them if they haven't posted by a certain time.

Like, 6 months after registering. Or less.

Oh, and the dancing veggies... hahahahaha

Yes, this and the mob mentality that can be somewhat prevalent. Mostly I like VB very much, it's just easier to lurk here IMO.

Don't know if this has already been said in this thread, but surely a lot of those "people" who are on-line are not real people, but search-engine spiders? Those spiders crawl all over the internet, 24 hours a day, and they are VERY numerous.

On a board I run, we delete people who have never posted and who have not logged onto the board for about six months. But if we see that they have been "lurking" we leave them. There's nothing wrong with lurking.

But a lot of people join boards and never bother to log-on again. (I find this odd, but go figure...)

Unwound...

Usually when someone shakes their head back and forth after a statement is made, it usually indicates disapproval of the statement.

Perhaps I need to study what each smiley means.

bc...no harm no foul, yes. We need some new smilies, perhaps. But seriously, what do you think of honey-fetish porn? (shudder)

Diana...there are many spiders indeed, but I meant over 100 real people. I was another board too, where old accounts were deleted. It was something where I had signed up to ask a specific question, and then never went back after getting the assistance I needed. A few months later, I got an automated email telling me that my account was "in danger" of being deleted. (I remember chuckling at the choice of phrase). It'd be nice to have that here, but I'm not sure how big of a deal it is to implement something like that.

Maybe all the inactive members aren't deleted because they pad out the numbers?

(ie. it allows for the "nearly 19,000 registered members" claim which I imagine is a lot more appealing to potential advertisers than using actual numbers which I think we can all safely agree is much lower.)
