Cyber bullying put simply, is quite nasty...

I think almost everybody on this board has experienced it at some point or other. Just yesterday I was told to f*** off on a chat room (dodgy things in my opinion, I don't normally trust them).

Does anybody on this forum suffer frequently from cyber bullying? A goes out to anybody that does.

Yes, it's too bad that some people seem to make a career out of cyber-bullying. I'm guessing many of the same motivations apply to cyber-bullies that exist for real-life bullies.

A cyber-bully once stole my lunch money. He typed that he was giving me a wedgie, so all I could do was log into PayPal and credit him $3.75.

Too bad alt+F4 doesn't work in real life.

IMO there is no comparison to real life bullying and intarweb bullying. Not even close.

I guess I don't see the big deal, as long as you're not a minor. As an adult, you should know its THE INTERNET. You can stop going to that message board, or that chatroom, or whatever it is anytime. You can block their IMs and their email, you can put their posts on ignore.

It's not something you have to deal with more than once.

I think boards can be cliquey sometimes, like cliques in grade school. If you are the new person you are usually the odd person out, and some person with 12,000 posts might slam you if they disagree, and their sycophants will often follow in suit. I guess it's how you pick your battles, often I find it more enjoyable to lurk.

I agree that they can be. I mean, I have my few people on here that I tend to stick with; but if a new person's posts catch my eye, I have no problems starting to talk to them, too.

At the same time, if someone's asking for opinions and they're dumb, I'm gonna tell them they're dumb. I'll tell the people I like they're dumb if they're being dumb. <shrug> Moral of the Story: don't be dumb.

I think it's better if someone goes into a place and lurks for a little bit to get a feel for how things are there before jumping in.

Here, for instance, we have people who come in and talk about how they eat meat, because they don't consider certain meats to be meat (huh?) People are going to jump all over them. If they'd come here, read a few threads, read the TOS, learned wtf vegetarianism is before they decided that fish, chicken, and pork on sundays is vegetarian, they wouldn't have a problem.

LOL...

When I get bullied online I tend to stand up to them using the same tactics. If they can hide between a screen and be mean, so can I.

A little OT, but whenever I see young teens today I'm so glad I went through Jr. High before the age of camera phones, text-messaging, Myspace, the Internet/cellphones in every home, etc. etc. etc.

It just magnifies by tenfold the ways in which teens can be cruel to each other, and even further oust those who 'don't belong'.

slops, gloops, and gruels.

Good point, and one that makes me sad.

I saw a lot more cyber-bullying when I was a teen. I remember yahoo message boards from when I was 14, and I can't remember why I stayed there, but everyone was just so nasty to each other. Eventually, I just moved on.

That's really the best advice with cyber-bullying. Move on. Put the person on ignore, don't reply to their messages, hang out somewhere where they know how to play nice in the sandbox.

Yes I put one person on ignore yesterday who was found to be regularly trolling my posts. I am feeling more relaxed at the boards now. Goddess knows my life can be ****ty enough as is and playing online is supposed to be a hobby.

As soon as I read this, I started a poem about cyber-bullying which rhymes with "lame".

But it's not good enough to publish here, so I'll keep it to myself.
