I am in the fifth. which is odd, because i certainly do not feel on the higher end of things....

People tend to compare themselves to their neighbors rather than the population at large...couple that with the fact that television sitcoms are set almost entirely in the upper-middle class, and people get a distorted view of what normal is.

It's probably also because people these days live well beyond their means. Someone may have the appearance of being wealthy or middle class because they have all the trappings of success, but so many people are deep in debt.
