Wild find: Half grizzly, half polar bear

Hunter bags what expert 'never thought would happen' in wild

Updated: 10:10 a.m. ET May 11, 2006

IQALUIT, Nunavut - Northern hunters, scientists and people with vivid imaginations have discussed the possibility for years.

But Roger Kuptana, a guide from Canadas Sachs Harbor was the first to suspect it had actually happened when he proposed that a strange-looking bear shot last month by an American sports hunter might be half polar bear, half grizzly.

A scientific phenomenon, and this jerk shoots it.

He didn't kill it because it was different, but it's still sad that he took the life of the only verifiable natural grizzly-polar hybrid.

Do you really think he knew this was a grizzly/polar bear cross when he killed it?

For those of us who think the **** shouldn't have been there in the first place, it doesn't matter.

I think it does. Why make false accusations?

What was the false accusation?

The bear being a scientific phenomenon? The guy being a jerk (well, I'll grant that '****' might be more appropriate)? The guy shooting the bear?

The accusation that he knew that it was a hybrid when he killed it.

So was that accusation made in the link? Because the statement "A scientific phenomenon, and this jerk shoots it." by no means exclusively implies it.

Some could easily make that argument.

From the first post yes, not so much from the post you originally quoted.

Anyway i think this arguement got way off topic. I don't support hunting. However the large majority of hunters probable would not have killed the animal if they had known that it was a hybrid.

Hunters like to shoot unusual animals because they make nice trophies. This is seen by the popularity of shooting albino deer.

Believe it or not, hunters like to hunt for trophies. Unusual animals make unusual trophies.

If this hunter was looking for "the typical bear" he would not have shot this unusual looking animal, he would have shot one which looked "typical."

I know many hunters and none of them would shoot something that is a scientific phenomenon. I know there are many hunters out there that would love to shoot this animal but those are the type that would poach an endanger species also. Most hunters do have ethics and would report something like this to the authoritys instead of killing what is perhaps the only one in the world.

See what you made me do. You made me defend hunters.

I can't believe that a statement I made when I was pissed off at seeing a bear shot dead, and didn't stop to verify whether what I posted was true or not, got picked apart like a Jane Austen novel in a high school English class!

OK, so apparently he shot first and discovered it was a rare bear type afterwards. Geez. Calm down, guys. Go make a smoothie or something.

And he paid $50,000 for the license and such to kill a polar bear...

That's the part I have trouble with. Not only do they need to feed their bloodlust by shooting innocent creatures, but they're willing to pay a small fortune (about 4 times my annual salary) for the opportunity.

I'm really curious why he is shooting species with such a low population. 1. Why is this allowed? 2. Why the **** does one have to go around shooting rare animals to prove oneself?

That's actually quite a natural response. Hunters of all species not only pick on the young, weak, sick and old but the different as well. It's not at all uncommon.

I subscribed to "Taxidermy Today" for a number of years for reference for animal replicas, so I think I have a good take on what hunters are looking for in a trophy. Unusual trophies such as white or spotted deer, unusual antlers, etc make the cover of "Taxidermy Today." Unusual = a good trophy. Trophy hunters want the unusual. I'm talking trophy hunting here (such as this bear hunt), not hunters in general, just to clarify.

Didn't polar bears just make the endangered species list? So even if he couldn't tell it was a hybrid, it was still half polar bear...and isn't about time they're illegal to kill now since their population is low? Argh.
