Planting Trillions of Trees now will Cancel Out Decades of CO2 Emission because

say Scientists

There is enough room in the world’s existing parks, forests, and abandoned land to plant trillions of additional trees, which would have the CO2 storage capacity to cancel out decades of carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new analysis by ecologist Thomas Crowther and colleagues at ETH Zurich, a Swiss university.

Trees are “our most powerful weapon in the fight against climate change,” Crowther told The Independent. Combining forest inventory data from 1.2 million locations around the world and satellite images, the scientists estimate there are 3 trillion trees on Earth — seven times more than previous estimates. But they also found that there is abundant space to restore millions of acres of additional forests, not counting urban and agricultural land.

“There’s 400 gigatons [of CO2 stored] now in the 3 trillion trees,” Crowther said. “If we were to scale that up by Planting trillions of more trees, that’s in the order of hundreds of gigatons captured from the atmosphere – and anthropogenic emissions will completely be wiped out.”

Hi,
There are links to a vegan work in progress story and related papers on this site @ LivingFloraBuildings.blogspot.com. It is a collection of images and digital artwork connected to ideas like Arborsmithing and the FabTreeHab or Fabricated Tree Habitat. Working on an associated story looking to collaborate with vegan writers and illustrators. Thinking on adding an edible ecosystem section and one on phytoncides. Also looking for funding for the project…

Trees produce chemicals called phytoncides that reduce inflammation, calm, revive and refresh sometimes dramatically where 10% increases in urban tree canopy correlate with 12-15% reductions in crime and 30% reductions in violent crime. Community gardens had similar effect

The Kayapo of the Brazilian Amazon plant their food forests within the greater forest without cutting down trees by carrying satchels with seeds of all their food plants and planting these seeds as they relieve themselves walking along their forest paths. A program in Fort Worth, Texas is now paying their homeless to plant trees, India has started to plant fruit trees on a national scale, Pakistan has initiated a program to plant billions of trees, China has devoted 60,000 soldiers to reforest their nation, Africa is creating the great green wall across the sub-Sahara, Kenya has committed to plant billions of trees, Norway has committed to zero deforestation, Israel has the most vegans in their military and the U.S. could do something similar if our military industrial complex makes mandatory vegan options in all institutions…

There is an organization that is actually called “Trillion Trees”. It’s a project of the World Wildlife Foundation and other eco groups.

Does anyone here remember “Earth”, that fantastic 1990 environmental science fiction book? In the book, there was a “Trillion Trees” movement, founded by the North American Church of Gaia, a year 2050 eco/spiritual group envisioned by the author of the book. Great read. The author won two worldwide sci fi awards - the Hugo award and the Nebula award.

BTW, I’m not trying to fiendishly insinuate any religion here. I’m just a big sci fi fan. Please don’t send me any bibles - I’ve already read it, cover to cover.
