For the past few days, I've been toying with the idea of selling my photography, but I'm not sure where to start. I know that I need to print them out (probably at Costco or Rite Aide), and frame them. Framing them, and figuring out how much to sell them for is where I get lost. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Here are some I'm thinking of selling, what do you guys think?

If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock Ân roll,
Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

I've sold a couple of mine:

and

My Dad printed them out for me in 8 x 10, matted and framed them very simply, including glass, and they sold for $150.00 a piece.

If you don't mind a hint, make sure your horizon lines are horizontal. Otherwise, very nice, and good luck!

Ooh, very nice. What kind of flower is that in the first picture?

Thank you. I don't mind hints. I will admit, it is digital photography (what isn't nowadays?), and I have some trouble holding the camera still.

Do you mind telling me how you came to $150?

It's a dogwood. I took that in Yosemite.

My Dad has a studio. He does sculpture now, but he used to sell photos. He decided on the price. I was thinking half that, but he said no way!

You might be able to get the place you choose to do the printing to level the horizon lines for you. I know people who have been pleased with the results they get from Costco.

Actually, I could probably edit it on my computer (or another one, since I only have a netbook). Hmm.. Where do you sell them? I was thinking Etsy, but I don't know how much business they get.

Oh I sold them at his open studio.

Yeah, you could edit them yourself. I wasn't sure if you had the software to do it. You lose a bit of the photo, and sometimes some resolution, so you could mount them on a slight angle too, under the mat, so they show as horizontal within the frame.

I don't know anybody that has a studio. Guess I'll have to ponder for a few more days.

Well you can always set up a portfolio of matted photos. Select six to eight of your best shots, and try to include a sample of each different type of subject matter you have photographed. Take this around to galleries, gift shops, restaurants, anyplace you see art for sale on the walls.

Have you looked into local art clubs? Most do regular shows. You might get a couple friends to chip in and rent a gallery for a night for a group show. There are always arts and crafts shows. At my farmers market there is a section of craft booths and a photographer who sells her work there.

You might also look into licensing your photos through a microstock agency. Here are some sites for that:

I haven't looked into art clubs, mainly because there aren't a lot around here.

Thanks for the tips guys, keep 'em coming!

You might join Flickr.com, which is a photography site. There's people on there that make their living doing photography, and are always glad to help. I've had my pictures in a showing, but no one bought any. You might try your local farmer's markets, or the local town/city/county fairs, or perhaps a local artwalk, too. Good luck.

Anytime I think I'm perfect, I remember that my cousin lives on an island, and I've never walked over to visit her.

No, I have a flickr account. It's just for online image hosting. You can connect with other photographers there, and you may get an offer, but you have to find another avenue to complete the sale.
