My parents, LuckBeALady and HardKnockLife, gave me my username at birth.
Seriously, some years ago, when I learned the word was forerun by the word, capstone, I became intrigued. In modern usage, capstone generally means "crowning achievement" or the final, or topmost stone in a wall or building, but in very ancient times, even before the pyramids, it was a cylindrical stone placed at the apex of a roof; a rope could be thrown over it, so it could be used for hauling up heavy objects. It was the forerunner of the pulley, one of our basic machines, and of the capstan, or windlass, used for raising ship's anchors and for driving magnetic tape through recording devices.
The word, cap, suggests stylishness, as a debonair chapeau, while 'Stan' is a name used by the masculine gender. The phallic connotation is just frosting on the cake.
Why did I choose it? They told me, for security reasons, I shouldn't use my real name.
