Why is it discouraged to take a multivitamin with iron? My multi has 1.8 mg per tablet. Is this a trivial amount? I eat lots of legumes as it is.

An excess of iron can be dangerous, especially for men. I think that's why many multis are formulated without it. That said, 1.8 mg is not much at all. The RDA for pre-menopausal women is 18 mg/day. I think it's 14 for men.

As IamJen said: dangerous in excess (though in the musical world INXS ...). I guess it's in your multi so that the producer can say: see we have iron, too. The amount seems trivial, however, and shouldn't do harm.

I absorb too much iron. I'm supposed to avoid multis with iron, and not cook in cast iron cookware too much. It's always good to check with your doctor before taking iron or iron containing supplements.

Love the post? Why not buy the T-shirt!
