I haven't been to the doctor for anything since going vegan 3 1/2 years ago (except for a girly exam and my nipple piercing infection).

I'm going in less than two hours to see a new doctor. I'm going to try to ask for tests on all the major nutrients, thyroid, etc. but my main concern is my tummy trouble. I'm reallly worried that I have a wheat/gluten and/or soy intolerance. Will I have to go to a specialist to find that out?

I'm nervous. *sigh*

I always get nervous about doctors' appointments too, I know how that feels...

Good luck, Sally! I hope it's nothing serious.

Well, so far there is no easy answer. I totally adored the new doctor - he was a great listener and he is prepared to investigate my tummy troubles (rather than just say it's IBS or write me a prescription).

I'm waiting on quite a few blood tests and I was sent home with a bag of stool collection containers. Great fun. *sigh* There's more, but I'm going to spare you all the yucky details.

I have to go back in 3 weeks.

What problems have you been having to make you think that? I've also made an appointment at the docs for next week because of tummy trouble. I think there's something wrong with my digestion, i can't seem to eat anything without ending up completely bloated and looking 6 months pregnant! It's really annoying me :-(

If it's a food intolerance (as opposed to an allergy) no doctor will be able to tell you. You will have to do an elimination diet to find out.

Sorry for your troubles.

Try digestive enzymes ...

After years of tummy trouble, I am finally diligently working to get this taken care of. I'm on meds for acid reflux at the moment, which has been PLAGUING me, I have been tested for every possible stomach problem, I have been told I *may* have Candida, etc etc etc. I started on the digestive enzymes today and everything I've read about them makes so much sense. We'll see how it goes. Plus, I've REALLY cleaned up my diet the past few weeks, my biggest accomplishment being taking all processed sugar and flour out of my diet. It's helped a lot.

have you considered DGL (a licorice extract)? it is supposed to be great for the stomach and intestines.

DGL can be a more natural alternative to medications that inhibit the release of necessary acids for digestion.

Sorry to keep you all hangin' for so long.

So far all my tests have come back negative. I have one more stool collection to complete before I can go back for more tests. (see my post about eating 100g fat for 4 days). I also have been instructed to take magnesium citrate to clear me out completely after the fecal fat test so they can do xrays.

StarLass, I've had the same problem. Plus, I hate to be so graphic, but I sit on the toilet with diarreah (sp) more times during the day than I care to admit.

I do take digestive enzymes 50% of the time (I'm forgetful). They do help alot. But I'd like to figure out if there's an underlying problem.

*sigh*

Hey guys...

Man, this is a long process! I got my results back (fecal fat test) from the doctor finally. The test indicates that I am not digesting fat properly. My doctor wants me to see a gastroenterologist (pretty sure i'm not spelling that correctly). It's another month and a half wait to get in to see one. *groan*

In the meantime, he had me do more blood work (B12 and other nutrients that he didn't test for the first time).

I'll let you know when I know more.

know you mentioned IBS (jokingly) and I'm pretty sure you are in sales. Until I learned to handle stress in sales, I had IBS and I had a list of foods I couldn't eat, but only during periods of stress. That stress could be from work, personal or just missing sleep. I also had a boss that bragged that he didn't have stress, but he was a carrier.

I don't know how this relates to you, but stress is a problem that shows up disguised as a lot of sicknesses.

Good luck.

Sometimes I wonder if that is the cause, NCBeachboy. My doctor asked me about it too. But it happens even on days when I'm not stressed and don't have a care in the world (except having to run to the toilet in a hurry!)
