Hi all,

Haven't posted in this bit of the forum before, so forgive me if this subject has cropped up before.

Basically, can someone explain how a composter works?

I recycle all my plastic bottles, paper etc..but is there a way of getting rid of veg leftovers / apple cores etc without chucking them in the bin? I've heard a composter can solve this problem.

Any info appreciated.

We have two of these in our back yard:

Essentially we put all of our plant scraps into it, alternating with layers of soil/dried leaves etc. There's a slot at the bottom that opens up and you stick a shovel in and turn it around etc. so that it rots and turns into nutrient rich soil. It does take quite a while; we started using our composter a year ago, and we expect we will finally have some soil for our garden from it by the end of the summer.

We did NOT pay $99 for it like the web site says... here it retails at The Home Depot for $45.
