Frankenfish

I'm very surprised that no one from PEI has posted anything about the genetically engineered Atlantic salmon eggs that an American company plans to produce in that province. Genetically engineered salmon can eat up to 5 times as much food as regular salmon. If these Frankenfish ever escape into the wild and multiply, then they would undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on the ocean's already-fragile eco-system. You can keep up to date on this development by checking out: www.cban.ca/?s=ge+salmon

Here's a more recent article concerning GE Atlantic salmon eggs. This article is about how the industry is trying to fast-track the process to get the Canadian government to approve AquaBounty's venture.

In Canada's parliamentary cabinet, Lawrence MacAulay currently sits as Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. MacAulay's constituency office is located in Montague, PEI. A Cavendish Farms potato processing plant is located in Montague too, and so is a building that houses the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development. Since MacAulay has held his post in cabinet, Health Canada has approved the genetically modified Innate potato and genetically modified salmon. Coincidence?

Although genetically modified (GM) salmon is NOT being produced anywhere in the world at this time, it IS approved for production and consumption in Canada, and for human consumption in the US.

Please tell your grocer NOT to stock GM salmon in their stores.

Below are some links that Canadians can contact.

Why would we tell grocers not to stock GM salmon in stores? We don't eat fish, we're vegetarians. I try not to even have to walk by the fish counter. It stinks and it's gross. It would be far better to convince people not to eat fish at all - for environmental and health reasons - than to try to convince them to read labels more closely.

Vegans should be concerned about this too. Please reread the first post on this thread to see why.

For info on all GMOs, check out: www.cban.ca
