ATTENTION: Nova Scotia

About 2,000 hectares of woodland in Nova Scotia will soon be sprayed with a poisonous glyphosate-based chemical. This action will undoubtedly contaminate the drinking water of the animals that live there. Ultimately, water sources intended for human consumption will, in all likelihood, be contaminated too. Strange... I thought I had heard in the news that glyphosate is now a suspected human carcinogen, and when I started reading the article I figured I had remembered wrong. Nope. I guess Canadian authorities are currently unconvinced that glyphosate is dangerous if used properly...

Interesting point the article makes, though, about how killing off the hardwood trees might deplete the soil nutrients. Evidently the softwoods (conifers) they want to grow tend to be shallow-rooted, while hardwoods have deep roots which bring up nutrients from soil deep down- and selectively killing hardwoods off might leave the soil which softwoods depend upon depleted of fertility.

The land that is to be sprayed is privately owned.
