Hi All,

Although I've become vegetarian and trying to go vegan, my reasons have been mainly health and environmental and I don't really consider myself an animal activist. But my local radio station has just gone over the line .

The station has a pig as a mascot and they're trying to encourage people to donate cans for the holidays. So they're doing a "save the pig" campaign. According to the commercials they're running, they've "kidnapped" the pig and claim they are going to kill it if they don't raise a certain number of cans by Xmas.

Now I understand what they're trying to do and I appreciate the fact that they're trying to get people to donate cans, which is a major deal - but kill the pig??? I'm not sure if they're serious or not but I'm in West Texas (think: cattle country) so I don't doubt there's some truth to it.

The commercials are horrendous - they feature pig squeals in between suggestions of what they will do with the pig if it gets killed ("Bacon? Ham?) etc.

No one seems to have called in complaining about it but, as I said, this is cattle country...

Oh, and it gets worse - I just heard the commercial again. Apparently, one of the radio staff is camped out at some restaurant taking the cans and he's got the pig with him. The commercial goes "so come by and meet the ham - I mean, pig."

Gives the term "meet your meat" a whole new meaning...

You might try contacting your local Humane Society office. Even they would be disapproving of this sort of stunt, and may offer some help. It could be that it's against animal cruelty guidelines. If they pulled this **** with a dog, for instance, it would get taken off the air.

The ones I pity are the ones who never stick out their neck for something they believe, never know the taste of moral struggle, and never have the thrill of victory. - Jonathan Kozol

Have you alerted PETA about this? Sometimes, the mere threat of PETA raising a huge stink about something is enough of a deterrent for stunts like this. www.peta.org

Just an update - the radio station ended the "Save the Pig" campaign today and apparently the pig is safe . They got the number of cans they were looking for and even exceeded it. I'm still pissed off at them for being such jerks about this poor pig but I'm guessing they knew they would get their number or they wouldn't have done it...
