I was having a discussion with my non-vegetarian boyfriend. He feels that PETA have extremely bad press and do nothing to get rid of the extremists in their ranks, he wants to know why have they not broken links with the ALF, who he believes are domestic terrorists. The PETA videos of animal cruelty was the main reason i became vegetarian and he has some trouble understanding my point of view.



This is a little beyond my knowledge. Could someone help me answer his questions?

IMO, this company is more a "domestic terrorist" than PETA or ALF.

Maybe show him the list of accomplishments Peta has done about animal cruelty. I just recieved an email from them the other day and they got another company to stop testing on animals. My non-vegetarian bf doesnt like either group also. I told him that I dont have to agree with everything that they are doing, its the fact that they are doing something, and it is working. I dont always agree with what these groups do but I have been thinking lately that I dont care what either group does anymore, the animals need help, and they are helping.

yeh that's my opinion, its better that someone is doing something.

To be honest, I don't like either group. But good luck making your beau see it your way [maybe be mutual about it and try to understand his point-of-view as well?].

I like PETA.... They are actually accomplishing goals that they have laid out, and in this day and age you have to be extreme to get movement going.... It wouldn't hurt them to drop some of their tactics.. but all in all I like them and they are generally doing a good job fighting the cause.

PETA does get a lot of bad press, but i think thats the omni's and people working in the meat/dairy fields that are trying to expose PETA's weaknesses. this is my conspiracy theory haha. but it makes sense.

Yea, when you have a faction of activists together, you are going to get a few extremists that take it over the edge, and you are going to get a few people that don't actually care, except for their job.

the big thing ive heard was the euthinasea on PETA's behalf. And while i dont agree with it, it is PETA giving the animals to the humane societies and them not having room for them. If we stopped force breeding animals, there would be no problem!

i noticed i went a little off topic there. that happens when i get steamed. sorry :P

PeTA is a fairly effective welfarist organization but to associate them with animal rights is just plain silly.

Many ARA's feel they have done more to set back the cause than they have to help push it forward.

personally i'm normally put off by anyone that uses naked models in their ads and things, but i think peta has a good point when they've basically said that sometimes you have to do extreme things to get noticed by the media. they've done so many good things and I'm a proud member

People may not like the way PETA does things, their ads, or their graphic imagery, but they have made A LOT of people go veg*n (myself included) with those graphic images & tactics. They HAVE successfully stopped many companies from testing on animals. They do get results.



My point of view now is that maybe everyone should see Meat Your Meet & the other videos. Maybe if everyone was educated on the truth, throwing red paint, protesting, or stringing up Colonel Sanders would not seem too extreme, it would seem like good common sense. i.e. - You should be outraged.

When I was an omni...I saw a sticker that said:

PETA - People for the Eating of Tasty Animals.



I thought it was hilarious at the time. Now it just makes me sick.



Personally I support anythign PETA can do to support animals, stop testing, etc...But I also understand the opposite. They have a 'tag' on them labeled extreme. Of course not everything they do is extreme, it just appears that way to the uninformed. (and moreso since they already have the tag).
