Is it okay to kill bugs?

What about fleas on your dog? Is it not cruel to the dog to let the fleas eat it up? How can you humanely get rid of bugs that are biting you, your loved ones, or your pets?

Does garlic work? What about black walnut hull?

Why so many threads on this?

No, I don't kill bugs...

I don't kill bugs to the best of by abilitiy, just as I don't kill other animals to the best of my ability.

(Ah, speaking of fleas - actually, it's not the biting that hurts your dog/cat ... it's the worms they can get from injesting the fleas that are the big issue... which either you have to kill, or they could possibly end up hurting or killing the cat/dog ... so while I try not to kill fleas, I do prevent them to the best of my ability.)

I only kill centipedes in my shower and mosquitos that repeatedly bite me as they are attracted to the light of my computer screen.

not totally true, with a bad enough infestation or on babies, the animal can lose so much blood it can become anemic and die.

oh man. bug killing threads are almost as rampant as b-12 and honey discussions.

I think black walnut hull is poison.

anyhoo,

Fleas die. Mosquitoes die.

Flies die only if they are attemping to repeatedly land on me or my food and have been given several warnings. those flys who wish to leave the premisis will be escorted to the outside.

Spiders are good luck and stay in the house. if they are in a potentially dangerous location (shower, doorway) they will be rehomed behind the bread box or fruit bowl to fufill their place in the universe by eating the fruit flies and ants.

You're right of course... I was only saying that the typical/most likely threat from fleas is the worms that they bring. It's a lot less likely an animal will suffer that kind of problem from fleas, although it is possible.

Either way, it's kind of tough ... the flea's only trying to survive, but I am closer to my cats/etc. than to the fleas, so I have to choose their lives over the fleas' ... so anyone who says they don't kill any animals at all isn't being honest with themselves, although I do wish that were possible..

Don't do that! They eat bugs that I'm sure would creep you out even more! Also, if they aren't bothered, they won't bother you. I've lived with a few highly-poisonous spiders (still do, probably, although I haven't seen them in a while). I might get a little squeemish when I see them in the corner, but they've never gotten in my way, so there's no reason to get in their's!

to dee-vee

learn about spiders by reading. learn which ones are poisonous. you are most likely killing non poisonous spiders that could not do you any harm. plus they eat other bugs, nature keeps her #'s in check.

to everyone

Where do we draw the line on what it is ok to kill, we must each choose, do we only not purposely kill what we can see or should we also try not to kill bacteria and viruses (don't laugh) which are also live animals?

some people still eat chicken (the line is drawn at mammals)

others eat fish (the line is drawn at land animals)

we must each make this choice.

I killed a bunch of ants yesterday because they were crawling on my toilet paper. I sprayed them with bleach. I have no idea why they're in my bathroom, there's no food there!

I try to kill roaches, but those little buggers could survive the apocalypse. I once drowned a roach in a pile of lysol but it escaped even after a second dose of lysol, a towel thrown over it, and a dance over the towel. Because it survived all that, I left it alone. Of course, I only make attempts to kill them if I see them in my home. Most recently I saw some outside, but instead of killing them, I screamed like a little girl and ran away.

What exactly is it that roaches do? As far as I know, all they do is spread filth and disease. Surely they must do something useful.

All creatures do have their place here ... Just because they might seem like a nusance it doesn't mean they should be eliminated ...

Why douse them in chemicals when you can just take them outside???

I must say though i am a bug killer. I dont go around killing bugs outside but if they are in my place they are goners. Anyone who would torture a bug though sickens me...there where some in school who pulled the wings off flys. oh man did i give them a talking to. anyway i wont kill bugs that wont bite or sting me. i'm allergic to bees and fleas so its either me or them. well i only break out in rashes from fleas but still.

the biggest reason i kill bugs? well heres the story.

one night at about 4am i woke i got that feeling in my ear like after you get some water in there and its draining out...so in my sleepy state i stuck my finger in there and itched it. moments later i felt a sharp pain like someone was shoving a pencil into my ear. it happened a couple more times so i freaked and woke up my husband and said "theres something my ear!" he toke me into the bathroom and looked but couldnt see anything. meanwhile i could hear something moving in my ear and the pain continued. so we pours some peroxide to flush it out. well it came part way out and Bill tried to grab it with a tweezers but only got part of it before it crawling right back in. so now i had half an oozing, dying bug in my ear. so drove to the ER who said they couldnt help me because it was sitting right on my ear drum. so i had to go see a specialist. so i drove an hour and a half with a bug in my ear to to see a specialist who was wonderful and finally got it out....turns out it was one of those moth larvae who eat books and things.

SO, the moral of my story....i either kill bugs or they try to eat my brain.

Oh my heck I choked on water for that one.

I think you should try to not kill things and transplant things outside when possible. However, we currently have a ant infestation and have taken every possible precaution not to spray and remove any attractions. It's not working. Transplanting 100 teeny tiny ants outside is unrealistic. I'm vegan, earth friendly, take five minute showers, and protest when I feel people and animal rights have been stomped on. I do everything to not harm when possible. However, I refuse to live with something poisonous or crawling through my food. It would be very un-vegan to eat the ants and incredibley wasteful to constantly throw out food. I guess the point I'm trying to make is it's up to you and you have to be able to live with whatever decision you make.

Because I don't wanna TOUCH it!! You are more than welcome to travel to my place next time I see a roach, pick it up and drop it outside for me.

God, i love your signature, raw jess! Oh no - off topic. Somebody stop me!

Let's see, since I was talking of murdering helpless, ugly little roaches, I should at least say, in my defense, that whenever I see spiders I leave them alone or at least hold staring contests. And crickets are safe from me too, because I think they're good luck, even though I have no reason to believe that. so there, I'm not completely heartless about bug welfare.

Fleas and ticks are the only insects I will purposely kill since I don't think it's fair to let my cats suffer due to my beliefs, I still feel guilty about it but there is no other way.

All other insects I leave alone, if they are in the house I will either just leave them, or catch them in a net/cup and put them outside (except for crane flies, I get my brother to catch them, creepy things!).

it depends on the bug - we will kill roaches (though we haven't seen any yet in our new house thank goodness!) and I have killed a scorpion and a centipede. I keep a spray bottle of soapy water in the kitchen for when ants invade (we get the little ants "suger ants" I think people call them) - its better than using bleach or some harmful chemical. most things my husband and I catch in an observaton jar, stare at it for a while and then put it outside.

I kill bugs. All bugs..That bother me. Flies only live like two days anyhow.

But I hate people who kill bugs for fun..Like they find an anthome (forgot the name for the big pile they build :P) and start poking and spitting at it. Thats stupid and I would never ever do that.

But I do slap mosquitos that swarm around me, I dont kill the spiders though, I take them outside..

If it's ok to kill insects (arthropods) because they creep you out, is it ok to kill shrimp (arthropods) because they're tasty?

Uhhhh........

(for what it's worth, I rarely kill bugs, just sometimes scorpions and wasps in the house, and the odd mosquito or fire ant)

I don't have any animals so I don't worry about fleas on my own animals. If they are in the house, I try to avoid killing spiders, but as for mosquitos and flies, I will squash them. If we have ants, we buy a certain product..I'm not positive of the name but they eat the poison and carry it back to their homes.

We have a problem with those HUGE roaches that come flying at you

when you turn on the bathroom light at 3AM.

I tried everything from covering my trash, putting my dry goods in

containers, taking up the food dish at night, you name it.

One night while we were trying to watch TV it was like we were suddenly

invaded! They just kept coming.I really did try catch and release(unsuccessfully),

but it was disgusting to find roach poop all over my dishes and cabinets.

SO- I now squish with my shoe. It's over quickly.

I don't let my cats toy with them and torture them to death,I just

squish as quickly as possible. I have to say it makes me cringe every time

but this is the last resort.

Oh , and yes spiders are great! There's one we've named Pedro

living in our windowsill. Really keeps the mosquitos down.

I think I love you

That's exactly what we do. When it's hot we leave our windows open and lots of flying things like moths come in at night and all my spiders have a field day. We have at least 2 in every room (that I've seen--but I read somewhere you are never more than a metre away from a spider at all times so I'm sure there are tonnes more that I haven't seen)

If you wish to live and thrive,

Let a spider run alive.

I kill fleas because they cause my dog physical discomfort. Every other insect/spider is saved. Unless of course my dad isn't home to take care of the spiders for me (yikes!) then they die at the hands of my brother's shoe.

I try not to kill bugs, especially spiders, but every now and then you accidentally step on one. The last one I intentionally killed was a mosquito after it bit my leg 3 times.

I kill bugs all the time. I drive a car. I would ride by bike but it was stolen from my home, you see. I don't have the money to replace it right now.

I really don't feel about it, though. They're bugs.

I kill some certain bugs also. Definetely fleas, ticks, and mosquitos which affect the health of my companion animals.

(Given that there was a thread titled "Do YOU kill bugs?" not too long ago, I predict it's only a matter of weeks before someone starts the "Do you kill BUGS?" thread.)
