Canada just declared that animals are now considered “Sentient Beings”

Quote:
According to the CBC, a new Canadian bill that was issued in late 2015 states that “animals are now to be considered as “sentient beings” opposed to being labeled as property.”

I wouldn't get too excited there. The Parliament just had Bill C246 which would modernize anti cruelty laws to protect animals and it didn't pass in October. The fear was that it would impact hunting and fishing and step on the toes of animal agriculture and prevent them from committing their standard practise animal cruelties (beak cutting, castrating without anesthetic, thumping sick piglets, etc.)

We're as behind the times as ever, we still allow baby seals to bashed and sliced and pigs still get transported without food or water from Alberta to Hawaii and the sows are in stalls.... archaic and still cruel.

I fluctuate between being a 'glass half full' kind of person and a 'glass half empty' sort.

Which animals though?

Are they still allowed to use things like glue traps?

Yes, it's still legal to use glue traps, leg hold traps, sow stalls, battery cages, starve and freeze them in transport, lock calves in tiny veal pens with a plastic igloo for shelter, operate puppy mills and fur farms........in other words, nothing changed. Oh wait, the animals 'get the satisfaction of knowing that they are now known as sentient beings'. They must feel so good eh?
