This week(ish)'s star is.....das_nut!

Vegan, but not militantly so.

How do you spend your working week?

I am the go-to guy for all sorts of IT work. It tends to lead to some challenging problems, but the work level and the stress level can also be very high.

What is the meaning behind your username?

I'd rather not get into it. It's not that great of a story.

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Not anyone "famous" by VB standards.

Do you live with any companion animals?

Nope. But two animals live with me as their companion human. They are both cat-hair generation units, a few years old, spayed. One's named Salamander, the other is Willowpede.

Do you live with any companion humans?

Nope.

Where is your favorite place that you have visited?

Forests of northern Minnesota. Beautiful, very rural areas, with lakes, bogs, and the occasional abandoned mine pit, depending where you are.

What do you enjoy most about being veg*n?

Karma. It's nice to eat a diet that results in far less cruelty to sentient beings.

What is your favorite VB post?

The "Dasunt's apotheosis thread". Too bad nobody has made it yet.

With whom would you most love to have dinner?

I'm not fussy. Anyone who can engage in a challenging conversation would be nice.

Do you have any secret talents?

I tend to be able to fix almost any mechanical problem. I'm a fast reader. And I'm not bad at long distance endurance bicycling.

What dish/recipe can you make that knocks people's socks off?

Hummus. I make damn fine hummus.

What's your favorite restaurant?

Hard Times Cafe. Great food, all vegetarian or vegan, and great prices.

What do you do to cheer yourself up when you're feeling blue?

It depends. Sometimes I put on sad music and stay blue. But if I need a pick-me-up, I tend to head outside and enjoy the sun. Either I take a walk or a bicycle ride. We spend too much time indoors being sedentary, and I don't think it's good for our mental health.

What's your biggest cooking/baking disaster?

I cannot bake bread. I don't know why. It just doesn't work. It always fails, in a slightly different way each time.

What's the one food/product, that you'd love to "veg*nize"?

I can't think of one off the top of my head. I don't tend to long after food I can't eat. On the other hand, I used to be very fond of pickled herring...

I might be mistaking you for someone else, or just making it up completely, but I think some years ago you were involved in some sort of serious accident involving a rotary UPS or some such device. Am I right? Do you care to refresh our memories? It sounded like an exotic and fascinating sort of accident, although not very pleasant I'm sure!

I no longer post here after VB was sold in 2012. (See my profile page for details.)

Do you play any instruments?

If you could instantly learn one instrument, what would it be?

Rotary UPS?

If I did have such an accident, it seemed to have destroyed my memories.

Have had a few serious incidents, but none with a rotary UPS, whatever that is.

I probably play the saxophone and trombone very, very badly, considering the years I haven't practiced.

As for instruments I'd like to pick up, I wouldn't mind knowing how the play the harp, the recorder (or similar flutes) and the guitar.

What's the story behind your avatar?

Did you write the book of love, and do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock Ân roll,
Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Hello there! *waves*

Has das_nut ever seen the German movie Das Boot?

Enjoying as you have had the forests of Northern Minnesota, you must have had some interesting close encounters with wildlife. If so, I'd like to know what kind.

Strawberry jam or orange marmalade?

Chess or poker?

How much longer does it take you to ride your bike to work in the winter than in the summer?

It's from "Porco Rosso", an anime by Miyazaki.

The film takes place in and around the Adriatic sea between the world wars. The title character has a curse that makes him into an anthromorphic pig.

Great film, if you've never seen it.

Informed.

I look at the issues, not the party or the politician. All parties have their downsides, and I'd say that holds true for almost every politician I can think of.

What's your favorite time of day? Why?

I don't know if I have a favorite time of the day. I want to experience the entire day. Give me the dawn of a new day, a warm morning, a nice afternoon nap, a pretty sunset, and the stars above at night, all in the same day. That would be a good day.

Quote:
Do you prefer cats over dogs?

Er, not sure. I have cats now, so I guess I'm leaning in that direction.

Probably a long, long time ago. I should watch it again, since I barely remember it.

Not really. Wild animals tend to stay hidden, for the most part. I wish I had some really great stories. Maybe I could lie. "Once, I saved a fawn from a giant cougar..."

Strawberry jam. I like strawberries.

Quote:
Chess or poker?

Chess. Hands down. A game of skill.

I'd like a raw pizza. With a non-sweet topping. Last good raw pizza I had featured a nut "cheese" on top.

Week long doesn't give me a lot of time. Where could I go where I wouldn't mind leaving after a week?

Maybe Finnland. I've always been curious about what the nation looks like, and I think I could see enough of it in a the timespan given to be happy with the trip.

Now, if the time was longer, my answer would change.

Yes. Big fan. Great movies, and a lot of them have a bit of almost childhood innocence.

My first bike is my all around bike. Has a Schwinn world sport frame (25", or 63.5 cm), with mostly Shimano components. Currently set up with fenders, front and rear racks, 24 speeds (3x8), and bar end shifters. Right now I'm still running a studded front tire (out of laziness at this point) and a rear tire with a very light inverse tread.

Second bike I got from a family member who bought it new, and I'm pretty proud of it. It also started out as a Schwinn World Sport, still a 1980s frame, but slightly newer than my other bike. It was a 12 speed originally. I ended up replacing the bad 27" wheelset with a used cheap fixed/free wheelset, cut down the chainring bolts on the front wheel and ended up using the original chainring and original sugino crankset (had to cut down the chainring bolts), replaced the bottom bracket pedals (bearings were shot), converted the old "safety" levers to more modern looking levers, complete with new hoods (a hacksaw was required), replaced the brake cable and housing, added a taller stem and seatpost, and replaced the old seat with something more modern, then added a rear light.

I'm pretty proud of that bike. It looks good, and I liked reusing the old components where I could.

The other bike is getting closer and closer to how I want it to look, but it isn't there yet.

Quote:

I've moved, so I must drive to work now. Alas.

But for winter errands, I'm probably running at about half or 2/3rds of the speed that I travel in summer. It depends on the weather.

For example, without snow, on the same bike I usually ride in winter, configured the same way, I managed to make it to a friend's house in under half an hour, going through downtown.

In winter, on roads that were mostly deserted, it took around an hour.

I've live in a horrible, backwater, 3rd world country where the people were superstitious, the infrastructure was sometimes questionable, and the politicians were corrupt.

But all and all, the weather in the Deep South was pretty nice.

(Never been out of the USA. Probably will end up Soviet Canuckistan sooner or later when I have a lot of vacation time. I've been to the west coast, and around the midwest, as well as the south.)

Never had that.

But I do long for the beauty of a rocky shore of a small northern lake. They are pretty.

If you lived in America in 1776, would you be pro-Revolution or anti-Revolution?

Have you ever wanted to yell at the ice-fishers in Minnesota, "Get a life and save a fish!"

So, when does spring actually start in Minnesota, July or August?
