i know it's still too soon after christmas for some people to even think about it but it's coming up fast. what's everyone planning?

it also happens to be our wedding anniversary so we really should do something but we're really tight on cash so not sure what yet.

I have been thinking about it too... i think we are kinda tight on moo-lah too so im thinking of buying him a wireless router thing for his xbox so that we will both be happy. i might make him a cake or buy him some truffles.

i was researching free ideas for v-day a week or so ago and someone had the idea to buy a box of cheap valentines day cards( the kiddie kind) and write different reasons why you love person and put them in a pretty box or something. i think that is a neato idea

That's a really sweet idea! We don't usually exchange gifts for V-day, but I do like to make my hubby a special meal and then we have a romantic evening at home.

I discussed this with my other half since his birthday is a few days later and our anniversary shortly after. For Valentines day we're doing this:

- spending the night in together watching movies we have already or have from Netflix

- having dinner together in the house, at the table

- making something for eachother that involves spending no money

Pretty much, our goals are to do as much together without spending a cent as possible. There's plenty of stuff in the house we can use to make something for each other. Loving someone doesn't need to cost anything

I think I'm going to make a big fat cheesy valentine, the glittery heart type deal. That's just because I found some glitter in my room at my parents' house...

I want to make a vegan cheesecake since cheesecake is boyfriend's fav, though I don't want to disappoint if it's crap! So I'm not sure about that yet.

The kiddie valentines are a cute idea! You could also make those 'relationship coupon' things out of them! You know? 1 Free Backrub, foot massage... etc.

Aw no, if money is spend you can't ignore it. It's like a big snub to someone that tried hard (well, maybe not necessarily) to make you happy. I know my boyfriend likes to beat himself up about doing something special. Really, we just like to spend time together.

Like others have said, there's no need to spend money, just do something sweet or thoughtful

I have a really good recipe for NY Style Cheesecake...it's in one of my cookbooks, can't remember at the moment which one, but I'd be happy to dig around for you if you would like to give it a try! I've made it twice, since the holidays...all my omni friends ate it up!

Yeaah but like, i have made it clear i dont celebrate the holiday T_T

My last boyfriend got all upset when i told him

1) i didnt want to celebrate it

2) I dont like roses he brought me on the day hahah

I dont see why affection like that should part-take on just one day, it should be like that everyday of the relationship, not on one overated cheesy holiday hahaha

I want to ask my husband if he's OK with us not exchanging gifts. I tried to do this last year, but he'd already bought me something.

With Christmas Dec. 25, and his birthday (this year was his 30th!) Jan. 11, usually I'm all gifted out by the time Valentine's Day rolls around.

We'll be away for the weekend and we're going out for a nice dinner... hopefully that will be enough for us both.

Assuming I'm still dating my guy by V-Day (it's a new relationship, so you never know), I'm sure we'll do something. I've never had a boyfriend on Valentine's, so I'm kinda hoping this works out, if only for that reason...

My husband and I usually just open a bottle of wine and make a really nice late dinner together after we get the kids in bed. We don't usually do gifts on Valentine's Day, just cards.

or better yet scatter them all over the house so everywhere they go they'll find them. tape some individually wrapped chocolates or candies to them so they get a goody every time they find one. (incidentally guys this would be a really romantic way to propose, ie the very last card would have a ring taped to it instead of a chocolate)

Last year I made a massive cookie in a love heart with cheesy red writing saying I love you. It was delicious. I wouldn't do anything involving too much real effort though.

I'm planning on waking up, saying "Happy Commercialism Day!" to my hubby... and going about my day as usual.

I don't believe in Valentine's day. I don't think one day a year is good enough to show a person how you feel and treat them well. I'd rather do that all year. And keep the pretty flowers in the ground where they can continue to grow.

hubby and i show our appreciation for each other the rest of the year too but sometimes it's fun to go outside of your daily routine and go on a date or whatever. some of us need an excuse to justify spending the money and/or time. it's not that we don't want to go out and do stuff the rest of the year but we can't justify the cost. on v-day/our anniversary it gives us the chance to say budget be damned let's go out for dinner and a movie

i can totally understand why a lot of people choose not to celebrate v-day or st patrick's day or any other holiday that's really commercialized, and maybe someone should start a thread about why they don't celebrate... but i find going into a thread to just bash the topic and say why you have no interest in it is just a waste of time and aggravating for those people who do enjoy the topic and want to discuss it.

on that note. we agreed not to exchange gifts cause we're too broke this year but it's a shame cause i found a ring that matches my engagement ring to a t and it'd make such an awesome anniversary/v-day gift it's a silver and cubic zirconia cheapy thing so i'd wear it on the other hand as just an accessory not as an anniversary ring. but yeah we'll instead use that money to go out for dinner or maybe pick out an item for both of us that we've been putting off getting or something i dunno. it's for the best cause i don't have the slightest idea what to get him lol

we're a bit tight on cash plus there is a bus strike, so we're a bit limited in what we can do. there's a comedy club not too far from where he lives, so we might do that. I really have no idea and I don't care too much so long as we are together!

^^ I'm kind of the same way.

I know Valentine's is all about buying things, but I like to think of it as another excuse to cuddleup to my boyfriend. We're together all the time but.. I want to make this Valentine's day special for my boyfriend because we will probably both be a little down.

Last year, he and his best friend drew the lyrics to a sweet song and all kinds of weird designs, notes, and things (like video game rings and 'super speed' tunnels) all the way from the dorms to my first class (about 4-5 blocks) in colored chalk in the FREEZING cold. A couple weeks after that his best friend committed suicide. Part of this chalk is still visible even though it's almost a year old. It's in such a place that no one walks on it and it doesn't even get rained on... We both still have classes in the building.

^^^ Woah... in that case, Valentine's Day should always be a time for you two to show extra extra Love and appreciation that you have each other.

For me, my husband and I are always very gentle and kind and do special things for each other year 'round, as I'm sure you do, too. But I really love that there is a day 'specially set aside for Love. I do agree with many posters here that it's overly commercialized, but I think people need to focus on Love more than ever. If Valentine's is that day, well then, I'll take it!

^^ I agree with that.

It's not cute to go to the store around midnight the night before Valentines to buy a box of heart-shaped chocolates. My boyfriend and I were at Walmart around that time last year getting a puzzle (which I sitll have, hanging up in a frame). We waited in line forever because there were so many people with Valentine's day crap. It was disheartening. If you have someone to buy that stuff for, you should have put a little more though into it

I buy cue-cards and write little notes to my boyfriend, then hide them in add places (between the last few pages of a book he's reading, behind his side of the mirror, inside his favourite cereal...) all year round. He writes me little notes in my sketchbooks or on paper tucked into my blush compact. <3

We are SO cheesy-in-love, lol.

fyi if you're lazy and not vegan one tin of pillsbury chocolate chip cookie dough perfectly fills a pizza pan. it shouldn't be hard to shape it into a heart right on the pan

i did it for a birthday gift for a friend in highschool because she was obsessed with the giant cookies they sold in the cafeteria

ahh, i just realized v-day falls on the day that i work, and i work the next day too so we're going to meet up at a vegetarian thai restaurant close to where I live and just enjoy some yummy veg food. He hasn't gone to a veg restaurant with me yet!

For a gift, I think I will just make him a big heart shaped valentine. I love crafty things and we both love homemade gifts over storebought crap anyway. Plus this gives me a perfect excuse to go buy glue and glitter at the dollar store!!

ETA: Actually, I might also write him a little poem or something. We're both writers and we met AT a writing class, so it really means something on a deeper level when we write each other little things
