theres a new tv ad coming out by the meat & livestock association which has, as usual, sam neill as the mouthpiece promoting red meat. jill singer of the herald has written a short opinion piece which is surprisingly unbiased.

Quote:
HOW do I loathe the new Sam Neill ads for red meat? Let me count the ways.

As a consumer I find them misleading. As a woman I find them patronising. And as a fan of Sam Neill I find them disappointing.

In case you haven't heard, the Meat and Livestock Association's latest generic television advertisement for red meat is being launched this Sunday.

It features Sam Neill making friends with an ape called Dennis and explaining to him that you need to eat red meat for your brain to evolve.

Just like the ad, if you don't eat chicken there must be something wrong with you! It's degrading

From the comments below the article:

Pushing red meat is like selling cigarettes... it does so much damage to the human body it should be a crime to lie in advertisements about it

I agree that its a brillant article, and that Sam is an ad slut.

We have our fair share of meat ads over here in NZ.

Man loved birds, he created cages.

I can't help but feel disappointed about Sam Neill. He's a pig farmer so what did I expect?

Sam Neill obviously has no morals, he's just the devil's advocate. Money money money.

I hate those adds. I really do. They make claims they can't possibly support and you just know they will now enter the popular wisdom, only to resurface again and again and again . . .

Isn't this advert great? I don't live in Australia, but even in the UK I'm glad whenever I see a meat advert.

WHY?

It means they need customers. There never used to be persuasive meat advertisements. Perhaps one meat would be said to be better over a competitors, but there was never adverts like this.

The advert doesn't even make any points. 'We were meant to eat it'. That's rather ambiguous isn't it? Any scientist, or even Biblical scholar if that's your style, can tell you that's not true.

Think about it: THEY ARE LOSING BUSINESS!

not necessarily. i think its more about maintaining business. as an example, look at the coca cola company, it spends a heap of money on advertising each year. & theres nothing wrong with their business. the number of animals being slaughtered in australia is increasing so i reckon the business looks pretty solid from where im sitting.

I agree with Kali. The primary motivation of any company is to generate profit. The only motivation needed to undertake any action is the knowledge that it has a reliable chance of increasing the bottom line.

Not that that's a bad thing in and of itself, mine you, as that's the way our society currently works.

Atleast with that ad I can see the Satire. The lady herself if made out to be a nutjob who's obsessed with chicken... but with the Sam Neil ads, it's borderline false advertising.

actually, and this is what upsets me most about the whole thing; he'd gone his entire career without ever making a single advertisement before the MLA campaigns. So he probably really believes the **** that is coming out of his mouth.

He is also in business with the brilliant John Clarke. I will not be able to watch anything their production company makes now. I actually saw Clarke at Las Vegan Bakery in melbourne a few months ago. So he is not opposed to vegan food at least...

thankfully, we dont get these ads in NZ, however whenever i go to visit friends and family in melbourne and these come on they make me want to tear my hair out.

the meat industry is raping australias water anyway. doing campaigns like this simply make it worse. - -;; i am dissapoint sam niel.
