I live in southern WV and the attitude here is: Steak or bust! In my local supermarket (the biggest chain in this part of the state), the selection of vegetables/grains is almost nill. The tofu is always expired (or a day away from expiration). As for vegies, I have yet to see an eggplant or anything "exotic" on the shelves. (The best I can hope for is spinach and cucumbers.) The only grain in the place is rice. Barley, couscous, anything remotely unusual is not stocked. And, of course, there are no health food stores in the area. I'd love to try some new recipes that require foods unavailable to me (though I suspect they're readily available in larger cities--the closest city to me is more than an hour away). Any suggestions for mail order sources?

i assume you're talking about ordering via the internet? and are probably the two biggest names of vegan foods/products.

Diamond Organics sends me a catalog that I drool over every time it comes. They have beautiful looking organic produce, lots of vegan take-out meals to have delivered to your home (perfect if you have a date coming over or a dinner party!), pastas, grains, nuts, etc. You can even have fruit or veggies or a sampler sent to your home once a month. I've haven't ordered from them yet, but I plan to soon. They do have a page of meat and cheese though.

You can find their website at

I am on a military base overseas. We do have a variety of good things available; however, things like nutritional yeast - amaranth/millet/dried garbanzos - TVP - etc. I have to get mail order. I buy from - they have things like agar agar, nutritional yeast, some grains and nut butters. I use them most, but there are others (just can't think of the addresses off the top of my head).
