Here's a little script I wrote to help you calculate how many animals you have saved since going veg*n.

http://wonder.sitehacks.com/animalssaved.php

Just enter in the date and hit submit. The numbers are based on PeTA's estimates of U.S. meat/dairy/egg production and the current U.S. population. Give it a try. Here are my numbers:

In 89.316 days, you have saved:

0.0336 cows

7.3769 chickens

0.0819 pigs

0.2458 turkeys

0.0196 ducks

Enjoy,

So PETA lied? In their veg*n starter pack they say that the average veg*n saves 92 animals a year.

Just realized this doesn't count fish or crustacians. It should be a lot higher for me 'cause that was my passion.

These numbers are great. Good work fellow Veg*ns.

Although I find it a bit strange to use the language "saved" that sort of feels like propaganda to me. To save something requires some active role. Veg*nism, however, is passive. We aren't really saving chickens, we just are killing them in the first place.

Also the the farm industry works by supply and demand markets. So it would take a certain critical mass for the farmers to realize that they need to produce less animals to meet the current demand.

So in reality does not eating meat for year really translate to directly saving an animal? I'm not convinced.

That doesn't mean that what each veg*n is doing is something positive. If I didn't feel that way I wouldn't be a vegan myself.

Here are my results from the script

In 1130.9 days, you have saved:

0.4255 cows

93.410 chickens

1.0378 pigs

3.1136 turkeys

0.2490 ducks

I'm unclear which point you were trying to make... are you saying that l/o vegetarians aren't "saving" animals, or are you making the same point about the use of the word "saved" as bigdufstuf?

If the former, I disagree, because l/o vegetarians are still "saving" animals, they just aren't saving as many as vegans. We're saving some and still killing others. We would need an addition to the script to determine how many animals vegans are saving, and whether the number of animals l/o vegetarians are still responsible for killing is less than, equal to, or greater than the number they're "saving."

If the latter, I have to agree. Sure, it makes us feel good, but how meaningful is it really? Still, every little bit...

However, it's not my intention to insult or belittle ~Wonder's cool little script, because it IS cool.

My results:

In 428.98 days, you have saved:

0.1614 cows

35.431 chickens

0.3936 pigs

1.1810 turkeys

0.0944 ducks

Fish, crustaceans and mollusks saved: Unknown

Cows and chickens tortured and killed through the eggs and dairy I still eat: Unknown.

I ate meat for 32 years, and when I went vegetarian, I told myself that my penance for the crimes I committed during those 32 years will be complete when I've been veg for 32 years, and not a moment sooner. Although in reality, it won't be complete in my mind until I've been vegan for 32 years (or possibly longer). So I have quite a ways to go before I can truly forgive myself.

According to the script, by that time I will have saved:

4.3980 cows

965.43 chickens

10.727 pigs

32.181 turkeys

2.5744 ducks

my statement had no hidden meaning. the use of the word "saved" is incorrect. i'm just not intentionally killing animals anymore.

i agree that lacto-ovos do kill animals but sometimes less than omnivores (depending on amount of dairy consumed for the lacto-ovo and amount of meat and dairy consumed for the omni - don't forget that some omnis eat meat once a week and dairy once a week) - however, that wasn't the point of my post. i acknowledge that some on here are defensive and would read that into my post. i should have known. sorry about that everyone.

0.4530 cows

99.451 chickens

1.1050 pigs

3.3150 turkeys

0.2652 ducks

I think we have 'saved' these animals. All of the above are domesticated farmed animals. By not eating meat, we have technically prevented the birth of the above animals and also their subsequent premature death to feed us. Since I don't eat chicken, 99 chickens haven't been hatched to feed me.

Is preventing the unnatural death of something by stopping it from being born in the first place 'saving' it?

Except that I never ate Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks or Fish... So, I've saved 3 animals total. I've saved more companion animals in 4 years of fostering than I've saved farm animals in 6 years as a vegetarian.

Cute little script though. You should add fish, and then a Total at the bottom.

Wow, great numbers boys and girls

I wrote this script so I could essentially give some visualization to my veg*nism. I know the numbers aren't completely accurate, they're just estimates. I took PeTA's numbers of animals slaughtered in a year in the US, divided by the current US population and multiplied that number by the number of years I've been veg*n.

I thought the numbers were kind of low for everything but chickens too. But if you think about it, a cow can weight ~1200 pounds while a chicken weighs significantly less.

Anyways, good job everyone.
