b12 suppliments question - VeggieBoards

So I picked up a bottle of b12 suppliments. I read somewhere that you need 10 mcg's daily, or 2000 mcg's per week. The bottle I picked up is 500 mcg's and should be taken daily. I'm just wondering why they're 500 mcgs if you only need 10 daily. Is this common for suppliments?

Also, the brand is equate, not sure if anyone uses them or not.

yes, that is common. part of it is the "more is better" mentality. part of it is that not all of the supplement is absorbed. part of it is that most people aren't going to take them everyday.

b12 is water soluble so it would be near impossible to get too much.

You need 2.4 mcgs of B-12 a day. The supplements are mega doses of it meant for people with low B-12 stores or who are wanting to build back up their stores. My stores were low and I took one 500 mcg tablet every day for a couple of months and now I just take one tablet a couple times a week because my multivitamin has some B-12 in it.

My B-12 supplement says it has 8,333% of the DV required per tablet and I take one every other day. I asked the person in the HFS if that is safe and she said that you can't have too much of the B vitamins. So, go ahead and B-12 yourself up!

You only need about2.5mg per day but when taking a supplement you should take between 10mg to 100mg per day as your body does not absorb every little bit of b12 you consume. If you wish to take it weekly you should take 2,000mg once a week. It is believed that you cant take too much b12 as the body just excretes it out in your poo B12 is not only essential for brain function but it will prevent you from getting heart disease. Even vegans can get heart disease if they dont get b12 and Omaga3 (via 2tablespoons of ground linseeds/flax seeds per day) You should also cut out oils such as corn, sunflower, cotton and a few others and replace them with olive and Canola/rapeseed oil.
