Dietary question.

I have a dietary question: if 1 cup of Special K has 8.7 mg of Iron, would a bowl of the stuff with milk satiate my Iron needs?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

According to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, "the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for all age groups of men and postmenopausal women is 8 mg/day; the RDA for premenopausal women is 18 mg/day. The median dietary intake of iron is approximately 16 to 18 mg/day for men and 12 mg/day for women. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is 45 mg/day of iron, a level based on gastrointestinal distress as an adverse effect."

Dietary iron absorption can be enhanced by consuming some vitamin C-rich food along with your dietary iron. Here is more information, from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the world's largest association of Registered Dietitians):

Specific recommendations for a healthy diet include: eating more fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains; cutting down on salt, sugar and fats. It is also advisable to choose unsaturated fats, instead of saturated fats and towards the elimination of trans-fatty acids."
