Since I don't eat sugar, I'm unaware of what good vegan candy is out there. I'd like to give candy out for Halloween, but don't know what to buy. What's the good vegan candy out there? I don't want to end up like my mom who used to hand out tiny boxes of raisins and peanuts to treak or treaters. Nobody wants that for Halloween!

Twizzlers = Love.

(The off brand kind I buy are vegan, I'm not 100% sure of any others, though.)

I fully intend to do it! Hey, look, if they're going to come and expect free food, I damn well have a right to give them a piece of paper with it too then!

I'm thinking of answering the door in a bloodied Colnel Sanders costume, too!

Actually, last year, some friends in my AR group and I got together and made up plastic easter eggs filled with candy and little flyers on battery hens and/or the fate of "easter bunnies." We rolled hundreds out on the mall here at school.

Candy + Flyers = Good.

Oh yea and some of my faves: Mary Janes, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, and Atomic Fireballs.

Smarties and Dum Dums are vegan, and widely available at Halloween time in every CVS.

Sad thing is, most of the vegan candy is very unpopular among kids. No kid wants to get a sucker or any type of hard candy, and giving out fruit or school supplies is insulting. I haven't decided what I'm going to give out. Maybe the little packs of starburst jellybeans and sour patch kids.

Jolly Ranchers were my favorite as a kid. But I was the oddball. Never a chocolate person.

i didn't like chocolate when i was little. that was good, though, since my parents took all the chocolate bars for themselves as "payment" for going trick-or-treating.

Thanks for the list dirtysole. We do "trick or trunk" at church, so I'll bring some of these things. Along with leftovers to round out the boys' baskets.

Okay, maybe I'm alone on this one, but don't you think you could lighten up a bit and just let kids have your vegan candy? I don't think the fate of battery caged hens needs to be passed out to little kids just trying to have a little fun.

No, I'm with you, I think most of the kids who come to our door are a little too young to know what goes on in the animal industry.

I agree.

I think if I went trick-or-treating with my son and someone handed him a flier on anti-abortion or religion or something, I'd be very annoyed, maybe even angry?

To me, at the very least, advocating for my friends who are being tortured doesn't take a break. It's abhorrent to me to do nothing when I have an opportunity to do something.
