Hitler promoted vegetarianism for the German people during World War II by making a virtue of necessity. By way of reserving what scarce meat there was for the German troops, with probably extra meat rations for the elite SS troops. He held himself out as an example for his people to follow. Some sources, including some chefs in a position to know, claimed that in private he ate meat on a regular basis. One of his food tasters, a line of defense between him and death by poison, swore the only food she was ever given to taste was vegetarian. But she wasn't his only taster.
