Cruelty free hair dye in stores?

All the cruelty free hair dyes I find in lists are only available online or in expensive salons (like Paul Mitchell) where I have to pay triple.

Does anyone know where I can buy one in a store? I've checked drug stores and stores like GNF but can't find anything.

can you try henna, black walnuts, or tea?

You mean dye my hair with tea and walnuts? I have no idea if I can. Does that mean I can't find a hair color kit in stores that's cruelty free?

Thank you, cuberail! I finally found one: Naturtint is in several stores near me. People give it good reviews too!

Whole Foods has several brands. I don't have personal experience, but found this link

You won't have to use walnuts. :)

I bought Naturtint a few years ago but was afraid to use it. It's still in the cabinet but I'm sure it's expired. If you end up using it I'd be interested in knowing what you think of it.

I've used henna for years and love the results. It is a time consuming process with making the paste to sit overnight, distributing it throughout hair without getting any on the walls and staining skin. I'd gotten so quick at it I forgo the gloves and my nails look like a heavy smokers for a couple of days!

Now I'm getting more grey hairs, and have a smaller bathroom. I'm not sure I want to continue. I hate how dark my hair looks against the greys-well white really but they're gnarly white
@cuberail -- have you used tea? I used to rinse with camomile but never one that had dye effects. Is it a temporary brightening or are there any like henna--but easier?

i haven't used tea. i used to use brown and black henna, and i liked it.

tea could last 3-4 weeks, depending on how often you wash.

recipe here:

i don't want to use anything that is going to break down the cuticle. peroxide breaks down the cuticle and removes natural coloring as it deposits new color. when the deposited color fades, the long-term result is always kind of orange. i don't like that orange color, nor do i care for the damage.

Well, I did it...and quite frankly, I'm shocked at the results. It did not cover 100% of the gray but it covered a lot of it. I will def be doing it again. I'm very pleased! :)
