The rising trend of veg*nism

With the Vegetarian Resource Group reporting 5 percent of the US population not eating meat, and growing interest in veg*nism represented by Google search trends, and the diverse background of VB posters, veg*nism seems to be on the rise. Myself, working in food service, have seen a growing interest in veg*n dishes, both for health and ethical reasons. Examining the backgrounds of VB posters; educators, scientists, lawyers, healthcare practitioners, food service workers, waiters and waitresses, sales associates, baristas, salespeople, entrepreneurs, slaughterhouse workers, and others are all represented. We are represented in essentially every field in our modern economy.

How well does this position us who wish to make a drastic change to consumers personal consumption habits to make an effective change? To me, it seems that we are all poised to respond effectively to vocalized desires for change.

Wow, is it really 5%? That's a significant number, I think I only heard it was 1% or 2% before.

I really do think a major change is happening and has been happening for a long time. More and more people are going plant based and the amount of products, events, meetups, etc is staggering. I remember over a decade ago when I first went vegetarian there were only a couple kinds of veggie burgers in the frozen section at the grocery store and maybe some tofu or unsweetened soymilk. Now even in the most mainstream cheap kind of store I see a whole vegetarian section and several different kinds of plant milks and Daiya cheese and all sorts of stuff, it's crazy. I don't think there has ever been a better time in human history to be vegetarian or vegan or to encourage others to make the change.

Edit: I'm moving this to the Vegetarian Support Forum for visibility.
