On the plus side, before I went vegan, I had never heard such a stupid comment at all...I joined VB partly because of three vegans who were about to enter my life, and I didn't want to look like a complete, utter dolt. Had I known what a small fear that was going to be...

Any time the plants have feelings comment gets brought up you can offer the advice they go breatharian, because eating foods from animals kill more plants than veg diets. (and they're wasting your air...)

My friend keeps asking me stupid questions or telling me stupid statements.
The most recent one is
" if you don't eat it when it's already dead it's wasteful"
So I had to explain that if I say, was going to buy six chickens, and the person behind me was also going to buy six chickens but I went vegetarian, and didn't buy the chickens, instead of us both buying twelve chickens together, they'd only buy six and only six would be bought.

She kinda understood but went on about how we need meat and every time I'd prove it wrong she'd just start talking to some of my other friends.

I'm trying to go vegan and everyday she says " don't go vegan"
I don't know why. It's not like I tell her not to eat the hamburger she ate today...

Why not tell her not eat dead animals when she tells you not to stop?
It's not profitable to keep breeding and killing animals if meat doesn't sell. Kind of obvious?
Whats truly wasteful is breeding animals, feeding them, giving them water, cleaning after them, using energy to kill them, process them, package them and ship pieces of them when all we need is grown from the ground

@silva , this is gold. Complete gold. I was going to offer a video of a person mowing a lawn (GASP!) and a slaughterhouse video (This person says it's "Propaganda"), but your suggestion is pure gold. Thank you.

For tonight's episode, of I Can't Believe You Said That, we get the debate on whether or not insects are animals.

Or minerals. Isn't that the game, animal, vegetable or mineral? Or am I loopy as a loon?

Coworker: Why don't you put some tuna in your sandwich? It's very plain
Me: I'm a vegetarian, remember? Tuna is a fish, I don't eat fish
Coworker: But my sister in law is a vegetarian and she surely eats fish
Then I went on to explain the difference between vegetarians and pescetarians and how her SIL is the latter....

Tonight we had a discussion, where my grandniece went camping, and build a very small fire pit, but didn't burn any bugs in it. This was after a dinner with fish and crab in it, on a three day weekend in the United States (Memorial Day) where we also had burgers, and brats... Apparently, eating animals is all right, but bugs are off limits...

"You know, the animal product industries want people to go vegan, just not the majority, because since vegans are all crazy, everyone else will associate abandoning animal products with craziness. So, if you don't want to support the animal product industries, go non-vegan."

Yo, this might actually work to help advocate veganism!

"You know the animal agriculture industry that you like so much because it gives you your delicious steak and bacon? They want you to go vegan to help support them. It's true..."

I'm so upset, you guys.

I just got into this conversation with this guy on reddit in a thread about Esther the Wonder Pig. I mentioned that her tail was docked because she came from a commercial farm and he said:

Quote:
for the curious: they do this so the pigs won't rip other pigs' tails off (resulting in gangrene, seizures, and death) for what appears to be little more than the hell of it.
WTF? I replied:

Quote:
It's not for the hell of it, it's because they're stressed in a dirty and overcrowded environment. Sows in gestation crates will often bite the bars until their mouths bleed because they're bored and stressed from not being able to move.
Wild pigs and boars that have space and the ability to behave naturally don't do any of that.
I'm almost in tears because it's so unbelievable to me that someone would assume pigs are exhibiting these clear signs of agony "for the hell of it." Maybe assuming these incredibly smart animals are actually just stupid and insane makes it easier to justify eating bacon.

I hear the "plants have feelings" argument a lot... way more than I would like to, especially considering it often comes from people I would otherwise consider to be intelligent *eyeroll*

Also, TFW you look at the vegetarian portion of a Chinese menu, and the dishes are clearly listed as being made with oyster sauce.... *facepalm*

We also recently learned that the vegetarian spring rolls at our favourite Thai restaurant (luckily we haven't eaten them since before going vegan) are made with CHICKEN BROTH - so yeah, maybe don't put that little green "V" next to it on the menu, eh? LOL
